Got this from ESPNs Schefter. Is there really no way we don't keep him? I know there are alot of other players that need addressing, but IMO Smith has now made himself into a very valuable addition to the team. You cap-nics know any way we can keep him? -------------------------------------- 4. The New York Jets openly have stated it is a priority to re-sign wide receiver Santonio Holmes, who is in the last year of his contract. They also have stated it is a priority to re-sign wide receiver Braylon Edwards, who's also in the last year of his contract. But deep down, the Jets and people around the league know that they have very little chance of re-signing wide receiver Brad Smith, who helped New York win Thanksgiving night against Cincinnati with a rushing touchdown and a return touchdown. Like Holmes and Edwards, Smith also is in the last year of his contract. Unlike his wide receiver teammates, the Jets know that Smith is likely to receive a strong offer from another team and they will be unable to keep him. Chances are, this is Smith's last season with the Jets. At least he is making it a memorable one. LINK
I bet the Jets would let go of Edwards before they let Smith go.....just for the fact that Edwards is going to want an insanely lucrative contract....and Smith's value to this offense/special teams can't be ignored.
Schefter has been wrong before, but if there isn't enough money left over after the Harris, Edwards, and Holmes contracts then he goes. Its business.
Sadly, the Jets have alot of FA's after 2010. I am sure Brad Smith is not at the top of the priorities. He is the man though. I agree with Schefter, he will probably get a deal like Antwan Randel El got with the Redskins. The Jets will know its too much for Smith, but Smith will have to take the best deal available.
Edwards isn't more valuable than Holmes...c'mon. I still think we keep B.Smith somehow....the guy performs the roles of like 4 players (KR, runs the seminole, slot receiver, ST gunner)......he's more valuable to this team than Braylon is, imo.
Yeh, I guess it depends on whether he loves this team enough to take a modest contract but you wouldn't blame him if he cashed in. He is a real X factor on this roster but Santonio, Edwards, Cromartie (is he a FA after this season?) and Harris - in that order for me - have to come first
I can't see a team offering him a huge contract. It's not like he's a top flight receiver, he's just a good at a lot of things. He's restricted so I imagine we'll match offers.
I was under the impression, that FA's already designated as restricted can't be removed from that list...?
Can't keep everybody with all the FAs we have. Hopefully we can work something out, but we have a lot of players that are more important that Smith.
I don't think Brad Smith is a necessity and this is coming from someone who has loved his game wayyy before he's been hyped up. Bottom line is he's going to be 28 and not getting any faster, Sanchez will be getting even better and taking even more control of the offense and as long as the running game is solid the wildcat is not really needed. A new kick returner and good special teamer we can find in the later rounds of this year's draft.
RFA status has to do with number of league years. They were both drafted in 06 so they have the same amount of league years. If they decide that players with 5 or fewer league years are RFA then both will be RFAs. We have no idea what's gonna happen tho.
Either way and whoever we wind up keepin I think this 2010 team is going to be the best team talent wise that we will have for a long time to come.Still think we are going to be very good for years to come but the talent we have now is hard to match. All we really need is an elite pass rusher. If it were not for the final eight restrictions of this past off season dont you think we would have nabbed Julius Peppers, tell me that would not have made our Defense insane?
