The Jets, New York’s other football team, has been stealing the headlines from the Giants since last season’s run to the AFC Championship Game with the boasts of head coach Rex Ryan landing on plenty of back pages. But the Giants will find their way back on top when Ryan’s Jets inevitably implode, says CBS analyst Boomer Esiason. “It’s exactly what [Jets owner] Woody Johnson wanted for his team,” Esiason said. “A guy that would separate the New York Jets from the New York Giants and that’s what Rex has done. But my senses tell me that it’s not going to end pretty. It could be three years from now, five years now or 10 years from now. “He will be walking a tightrope here because when he fails or his team goes into a tailspin there will be immediate backlash. Once that happens, it will be a short stick. Bobby Valentine and Davey Johnson (Mets) were like that and so was Billy Martin (Yankees).” Ryan’s second season with the Jets will begin Monday night against the Giants at the New Meadowlands Stadium in both team’s preseason opener. This comes after a public battle over which team would play the first regular-season game at the new stadium. A compromise was reached, with the Giants opening the Stadium on Sunday (Sept. 12) afternoon against the Panthers and the Jets playing Monday night against the Ravens. The new stadium is an important part of the Jets’ identity after playing for 25 years at Giants Stadium. The Jets will put six players, including Joe Namath, into their new Ring of Honor at halftime of the preseason game. “It’s great to have a fresh new start with a stadium that you spent money to build,” Esiason said. “And right now they have the right guys in place to get the most out of it, assuming they get Darrelle Revis back.” For the Giants, coming off a disastrous 8-8 season that started with five straight wins, to steal some of those headlines they will have to get through what Esiason calls “by far the toughest division in football.” “With the Eagles inexplicably trading Donovan McNabb to the Redskins, you now have four legit playoff teams,” Esiason said. “But [Eagles coach] Andy Reid doesn’t make that move unless he knew Kevin Kolb could take over for McNabb.” If the Giants can topple McNabb’s former and current team, plus the Cowboys, they could start a return to normalcy — the way it was for Esiason when he was raised on Long Island, the way it remained when he came to the Jets to play quarterback in 1993 and the way it was until Ryan burst onto the scene a year ago. “The Jets, Mets, Islanders, Devils and Nets all reside in the same neighborhood and that’s a second-class neighborhood,” Esiason said. “I knew that when I was younger and certainly when I was traded to the Jets, but I don’t know if that’s necessarily the case right now because there are so many compelling stories coming from the Jets.” justin.terranova@nypost.com

The way for the Jets to "be the team" in NY/NJ is to put a number of winning seasons and playoff appearences together. Oh, and a Super Bowl victory would help. Personally, I don't like all the talking that is going on. Do something, then talk.
I totally don't buy the second class neighborhood thing either. The Mets have had a piece of NY's soul since they were formed in '62. That's because the old Dodger and Giant fans never went over to the Yankees after their teams left town. The Yankees are the better team but the Mets have as hardcore a fan base as anybody out there and none of that fanbase are just in it for the championships the way so many Yankee fans are. Anybody who thinks the Rangers are #1 obviously missed the two dynasties in the tri-state area over the last 35 years. The Knicks are a walking disaster area, and although they are the undisputed #1 in basketball in town that just tells you how lousy basketball has been in NY since Walt Frazier and Julius Erving left town. The Knicks were almost good in the Ewing years, but that was just an almost, and they didn't finally win a championship like the Rangers did before they began to sink back into the mire. The only teams in NY that are head and shoulders above everybody else are the Yankees, who are head and shoulders above baseball not the Mets alone, and the Giants who actually won a Super Bowl recently and had a couple of others to brag on too in the last generation.
I love listening to Boomer and Carton on the Fan in the mornings, but what he has said has no real meaning. This Jets bravado, so to speak, is here to stay.
NO basis to any of his remarks....utter BS with all the talent on this team to say that ...obvious there are personal issues with jets the only period of time I absolutely could NOT watch a Jets game was when he was qb......not 1 game ... i HATED that MF from the day 1 he was a Jet
DEVILS SECOND CLASS CITIZENS????? To who??? In the time since the Devils came to NJ, the Devils won 4 Conference Championships and 3 Stanley Cup Championships. In that time the Rangers won just 1 Conference Championship and 1 Stanley Cup. But the Devils are second class to the Rangers???? If you say, "it's not about titles it's about popularity" then why mention the Giants winning the Superbowl in 2007? What an idiot.

Well, this is a pretty safe - and meaningless - thing to say. So, he could fail in 3 years, maybe 5 years, maybe 10 years, which is an NFL eternity. And what about the rest of the time? He'll be a success? Most NFL coaches have a very short shelf life. Not a lot of insight with this statement. I like Boomer, but sometimes he just talks to hear himself talk.

The Great 49er teams of the 80's 90's Dallas 00 Patsies Of course at some point things will fall, what goes up must come down. The NFL isn't built like the NBA or MLB to have the Big markets always winning and in the playoffs. There are no Lakers or Yankees in the NFL. Sure teams with stable ownership helps but that hasn't earned the Steelers or Giants 15 SB's a piece.
