Sad news, indeed. I will always associate him with Yankees announcer Bob Gamere, who (during his one year announcing for the team in 1970) seemed in every game to say "Murcer, on his horse" when Murcer was running after a fly ball. RIP.
He played his signature game on Thurman Munson's Funeral Day, he took the Yankees, New York and all of Baseball on his shoulders that day. He was nothing but class, the world loses one of it's best today. RIP
It's hard to get better battling Cancer, especially Brain Cancer. he got over a year and a 1/2 since his diagnosis which is alot of time. He wasn't the best player or broadcaster but I don't know if anyone appreciated being a Yankee more than Bobby. he was a class act that will definitnely be missed. Seeinh highlights it is weird seeing someone in #1 other than Billy and #2 other than Jeter. I strated follwoing the Yanks towards the very end of Bobby's career, I remember he retired in the middle of a season, I had a game that the next day and I remember a guy on my team went to the game as they were honoring Bobby. It's amazing how fast time flies. I hope Bob Sheppard isn't next but he's not doing well, the Stadium just doesn't feel the like the Stadium w/o him.
Though I dont go to a lot of baseball games, I was at that game. It was a special day/night in New York sports history. RIP
I was thinking about the same thing. It's been a really bad couple years off the field for the Yankees.
Very sad... Bobby was my first favorite Yankee as a kid... The first number I ever wore was #2 when I played for Danford Cleaners at 8 years old... I asked my dad who number 2 was on the Yankees and he told me it was Bobby Murcer... that April my Dad took me to my first Yankee game... It was against Texas... Murcer hit a homerun in his first at bat & I was forever a fan... Reggie then followed suit with an upper deck shot... then Murcer saved the game in the 9th with a diving catch on the warning track... the Yankees won 2 - 1.... Very sad day for me
