I hope they watch that game and learn how to create some effective blitzes, especially on 3rd downs. The Steelers held the Pats to 1-13 on 3rd downs in the game because they would send 5-6-7 guys at Casell from all different looks. HEY BOB SUTTON, TAKE YOUR HEAD OUT OF YOUR A$$ AND LEARN A THING OR TWO!!
Dont think anything will change for us. Be happy that where 8-4 and in 1st. even saying that im still not all that happy.
It's Mangini's bend don't break defense. It's not about Sutton. Mangini wants to rush four with 2 deep safties and keep the ball in front of them. Same defense the Pats run. The Steelers are loaded with fast players who can get to the QB and we are loaded with slow linebackers. Even if we blitz 6 we still don't get there cause our players aren't good enough.
Im really sick of rushing 3 and dropping 8. It makes no sense. Maybe it was a decent idea, but this is clearly not working for us. Our coverage guys arent that good and just rushing 3 doesnt get pressure on the QB. I just watched a piece yesterday before MNF on how the Jets have been dropping 8 into coverage and it just isnt working.
People on this board continue to confuse poor execution with "bad play-calling". When the Jets blitz with their outside linebackers they don't get there the way the Steelers get there. (The Jets ARE pretty good at blitzing with their corners and safeties but they can only do that so much in a game before they get killled on a big play)
Calvin Pace needs to step up. He's clearly our best pass rusher and he's been absent the last few games (excluding his Kerry Collins strip). A Bryan Thomas sighting would be nice too.
Check our sack totals before and after Harris went down. Obviously his presence makes a big difference.
And Barton needs to be taken out on passing downs. He's brutal in pass coverage. Pace and Thomas suck in coverage also, but they're not nearly as bad as Barton. Vilma in the middle would look pretty nice right about now, he had a great interception this past week against the Bucs. It just seems to me that Mangini was too focused on bringing in rush stoppers that he completely ignored the pass coverage. Anybody else also notice while watching our secondary play that they all seem confused, like they don't know where they should be. And Kerry Rhodes jumping up and down throwing a tantrum after every play also bothers me.
You know what's sad? What's so sad is the fact that Mangini admittedly allows the Pats to dictate what we do. Someone posted an article here in which he said something to the effect of, we won't blitz because they know how to beat the blitz. WTF is that!!?? Seriously? How about, We have an incredible defense when we Blitz? or We invested all that money in order to pressure the QB? or The Giants beat NE in the SB by applying pressure. I can't understand how a CS can allow another team to dictate what they do. It showed in BOTH games and will be our downfall.
Yeah, they definitely seemed confused on Sunday. The whole team did really, but the secondary in particular just seemed to be out of position all day. If we can't find a way to either get some significant pressure on the QB or stop the short passing game in the middle of the field, we stand a very good chance of getting torn up the same way again. I don't know if it had more to do with the gameplan or the fact that the players just didn't seem to be into the game at all, but man it was ugly.
it is not a case of knowing how. I haved seen this team blitz other teams ears off. Why they do not employ it, especially against green QBs, is beyond me? They did it to Warner for a half and shut him out.
