They're now safely inside the building. Whew. N.Y. / REGION Window Washers Are Rescued From Scaffolding at 1 World Trade Center By MARC SANTORANOV. 12, 2014 5 minutes ago Photo Two window washers, harnessed to the scaffolding of their equipment, were seen dangling precariously from the south side of the 1 World Trade Center on Wednesday. Firefighters on Wednesday afternoon rescued two window washers who became suspended 69 stories above the street while working at the newly completed 1 World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan. The workers, who were harnessed to the scaffolding of the window-washing equipment, were uninjured, according to the authorities. Shortly before 2 p.m., fireighters could be seen cutting a hole through a window near the platform and then assembling inside, where they pulled the workers to safety. The window washers had been lowered from the top of the building before their machine malfunctioned shortly before 1 p.m. It could be seen dangling precariously from the south side of the building. Crowds gathered on the streets below as dozens of firefighters rushed to the scene. There was a light wind, of about 7 miles per hour. Slick conditions from the rain could have complicated the rescue efforts. The tower opened last week, 13 years after a terrorist attack destroyed the twin towers that once stood in its place. At 1,776 feet in height, it is the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere. James McDonnell, 32, works nearby and was looking out of his 31st floor window at around 12:30 p.m. when he saw the scaffolding get stuck. “The sunlight was shining off the building in a remarkable way,” he said. He snapped a few pictures and then saw the window-washing basket sitting at a weird angle. “And then it kind of lurched,” he said. It seemed like one of the cables snapped, he said. Some liquid flew from the basket as the angle of the platform became even more precarious, he said. Ramon Castro, 59, a window washer in the local 32BJ Union, said watching the scaffold dangling reminded him of a time he was stuck on the side of a building for five hours.
