I hate Billy Wagner, I have never seen a met game where he can get a save without putting me through hell because i think we are gonna lose. He blew the save tonight and i was at the met brave game and he loaded the bases without throwing 1 strike. then got lucky cuz we got a double play. He is like armando benitez all over again.
Nothing like the fickle New York Sports Fan Even with tonight's dud that buried my fantasy team in deeper hell, Wagner has converted 26 of 28 chances and sports a 1.61ERA and sub-1 WHIP pitching in the highest pressure situation in baseball. He is a phenomenal closer.
He hasn't been good in August(5IP 9H 3BB 4K) but his WHIP before this was 0.84 and he saved 24 games, so I'm betting there were probably at least one or two in there that he put down pretty uneventfully.
As others have noted, until the past week or so Wagner has been as good a closer as anyone in baseball. The only thing I would disagree with is that this is the "fickle New York sports fan." All teams and cities have fans that are fickle - it goes with the territory.
I can safely conclude from this statement that you have not watched many Mets games this year. This guy is not as bad as former Mets closers Frank Fucko and Armando Benitez.
Proof, that some people will never be happy at closer. There are about 25 teams that would happily switch closers with the Mets.
