Confirmed that Bills have requested permission from Jets to speak with DC Mike Pettine for same position, as reported by @footballscoop.

its stupid that he'd leave being DC here to go be DC there. i dont understand it. i guess they'd just offer him more money or something, but he has a better chance of becoming a HC if he stays here with this defense

Prob wants to get out of Rex's shadow. I think most people know Rex has the most influence over our defense. I personally can't blame him.

By all accounts of the rift between him and Rex and him being outed as a major source of the Manish leaks, Pettine is done here anyways. They're just asking permission because his contract runs through the end of the month.

was this ever mentioned anywhere or just speculation because he declined the extension? ive never seen anything reported about a rift between the two.

how often do you hear Pettine heralded when the Jets defense is applauded?

if he never gets applaud or recognition for the defense, it would be stupid for him to stay. he is better served going somewhere else, and if he turns that defense around would undoubtedly start getting consideration for head coaching positions. how is that stupid?

Cue the first idiot worrying that he'll share all of Rex's secrets with Buffalo...

But he is DC in name only if he stays with the Jets. And everybody knows it.

I'd rather he stay, but we could just get Dennis Thurman at DC and have the same style/scheme. It would tick me off a little if he fucked off to the rival Bills tho.

Yeah he's definitely trying to leave - especially if he was the rumored snitch

Do any of you know if Pettine has a coaching background with the 4-3, or is it unquestioned that we'd have to make the switch back to the 3-4 with Pettine?

I believe he was with the Ravens and they ran the same 3-4 with Rex there as well, although my memory isn't great.

I'm not too worried about him leaving. I think Rex can handle the defense, so not much of a loss.

I don't know why people are shocked by this, the guy was a rat. Fuck him. Go to Buffalo. It's not like our defense was anything short of disapointing this year.

Don't kid yourself...the Bills have some talented players on that side of the ball. Fill in a few spots and coordinate it the right way, and we are talking about a decent defense. Turn around the Bills defense, and his stock skyrockets too. We'll see what happens.

If he ever wants to be a HC in the future, he's gonna have to build a defense somewhere else where he can get full credit.

For NFL experience, he's only been with Ravens (as Linebacker coach) & Jets (as DC). He's never been a DC with a 4-3 defense.

However, the Jets don't just sit in the 3-4 constantly. They go back & forth throughout the game & spent a good number of snaps in the 4-2-5.

Doesn't Pettine's contract expire soon?If he can get some security in Buffalo with a new coach, why not? The Jets are bringing in a new GM. Rex will be terminated by the new GM at some point within the next calendar year.
