He was absolutely one of the greatest college basketball players in history, being the leader of UCLA's 88-game winning streak. His teams didn't lose a game from the middle of his junior year in high school to the middle of his senior year in college (including the undefeated freshman UCLA team). He was Jokic without the three-point shot. I vividly remember his 44 point / 13 rebound game (on 21 of 22 shooting) in the 1973 NCAA Finals game against Memphis State (still a record for most points in a Finals game, and very possibly [given the context] the greatest individual performance in a college basketball game ever). He was a prominent anti-Vietnam War activist; as he put it, he "drove John Wooden to an early grave when he was 99."

He was just as dominant in the NBA, but only when he could play, being plagued by many foot injuries. He was a season MVP, a Finals MVP, a two-time champion with the Blazers and the Celtics, first-team all-defense, and Sixth Man Award winner.

He became a broadcaster after retiring, ultimately earning an Emmy in 2001, being well-known for catchphrases like his "Throw it down, big man!" scolding of NBA centers.

As a famous Deadhead, there's no doubt that it has been a long strange trip for him. RIP.
