Big Ten to address possibility of expansion December 15, 2009 11:43 AM | No Comments Tribune News Services As detailed by the Tribune's Teddy Greenstein in a story today, the Big Ten will make an announcement at 2 p.m.CST today regarding the possibility of expanding the 11-team conference. Big Ten spokesman Scott Chipman said an announcement regarding what he called "potential expansion" is planned. He declined to elaborate. Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez last week told the university's board that he thinks the conference is serious about adding a 12th team. The Big Ten last added a team in 1990 when Penn State joined.
Watch it today......it should be televised on ESPN News or the Big Ten Network. I don't expet them to announce a team.....only it's official they will be exploring a new member.
I've heard Rumors the Big Ten wants a team from the east. Rutgers and Syracuse were teams talked about....
Rutgers, Syracuse and Pittsburgh are the three being most widely considered. The Big Ten would love to have the NY Media market and that's what RU brings to the table.
I agree the SEC is the best conference. No need to piss on the Big Ten. Ohio State and Penn State are in the hunt every year. Mississippi isn't exactly a team that dominates. You have Florida and Bama to thank. It's difficult for Northern Schools to compete recruiting with States of Florida/Georgia/some of Texas....those kids have a huge advantage due to weather conditions and being able to run track and have sports available year round.
Pitt and Rutgers are the two best options to go. Rutgers brings in the NY media and Pitt vs. Penn State is still a big rivalry despite the two teams not playing each other for years. Anyone caught wearing Penn State gear on Pitt's campus is typically in for a long chorus of taunting and swearing from the general student populace. Fuck Penn State.
I saw this last week and didn't think it would happen. I still don't think it will...Jim Delaney is a piece of shit and he'll always go against the right thing because it makes him look like a hardass and a rebel. That being said if it does happen I would expect they'll go hard after Notre Dame although I'd love to see Rutgers in the Big 10. The Big 10 doesn't need 2 PA teams. My guess is Rutgers would accept the invite if offered.
Hey, prior til the Bama game, we're the only team to have beaten Tebow. I'm pretty happy with that. Compared to a winless SEC season my sophomore year, it's great to be here. I agree, the northern weather conditions handicap recruiting. My school has to overcome the image of an all white, christian private school that waves confederate flags and blasts dixie, with the majority of the fan base yelling shit like the south will rise again. We're doing just fine. The real difference is the importance of high school football. 4 states broadcast their high school state championship games, and all of those states are within SEC country. That tells you something. While football is a means of entertainment for most in the north, it's the way of life here. We've got shit else to do on the weekends. Ole Miss is on the rise, which says a lot for being in the toughest conference in the country. 8-4 SEC might as well be 10-2 Big 10. Give them 4 years with a 12 team championship system, and they'll be respectable. For now to oversimplify things it's just tOSU and PSU with an occasional appearance by Michigan.
They should try to add a good team like Boise St.(Pac-10 expanding anytime soon?) or Cincy but they'll probably get a cupcake like Syracuse.
Big Ten really wants a presence in the East media market. My guess on the 2 divisions and they will have a conference championship. The east is loaded. Can't separate OSU/Mich. Indiana and purdue are broken up. Big Ten.....East Penn St Ohio St Michigan Michigan St Purdue Rutgers/Syracuse/Pitt???? Big Ten.....West Iowa Illinois Northwestern Minnesota Wisconsin Indiana
Your program is good/not great....some nice wins Auburn, LSU. I'm just saying the Big Ten takes alot of crap and some of it is not warranted. The Big Ten just can't recruit like the SEC. Ohio St/Penn St get an occasional player from Florida and Georgia. The major problem, most of the skilled positions are from Southern High Schools. I'm not a Big Ten fan either, just call it like I see it.
Am I the only one who could see WVU as the potential team, or what of taking a team from a non BCS conference and adding them to the big 10
The market for WVU is way too small. Pittsburgh has a decent program for both basketball and football so there is they have the most well-rounded attraction. Rutgers football is coming on strong and they will attract the NY media market which is a huge incentive. The Big Ten has been trying to improve itself as a basketball conference and Syracuse could give it a boost there. Yet having two teams in Michigan and two in Illinois makes perfect sense?
I honestly couldnt see syracuse leaving the big east. That conference is so dynamic its not even funny. The basketball that has developed in the big east is unbelievable to watch. I find it so hard to believe that Boeheim would consent to changing conferences. Yes I do think he would be allowed to have some say in it being in the HOF and all... WVU would be solid as both a football and basketball school and adding a non-conference team like Boise State would be very, very interesting
WVU market travels better than any other big east school that is why the gator bowl chose wvu before the pitt/cinn game
The Gator Bowl chose WVU before the Pitt/Cincy game because the winner was going to the Sugar Bowl and WVU was a lock. WVU football might travel better but you cannot possibly think that its basketball team brings in a larger viewership than Syracuse or UConn. Both of these teams have national titles within this decade.
