Both Mike Garafalo and Chad Forbes reporting Jets want to go " big game hunting" for next coach Whether Macc stays will be irrelevant. Coach will have all the power Garafalo saying McCarthy Forbes saying Mike Shanahan. And he wants job
Hell no to Mike Shanahan. No. No. No. No means no. If he can ruin Robert Griffin III he can ruin Sam Darnold. To this day I still can't believe how long it took Denver to fire him. It was as if he was untouchable or something.
I want no part of the guy, but that's a little much. The Broncos had lost 4 Super Bowls under two head coaches, then they suffered through two years of Wade Phillips. Shanahan got them 2 VLTs, then got them back to the AFCCG in 2005. He had 2 losing seasons in 14 years--one of those was the year after Elway retired. His last 3 seasons were 9-7, 7-9, 8-8. The Jets FO would give a coach like that a 10-year extension, and he'd be hailed as the greatest coach they ever had.
I will concede that the Broncos certainly had the feel of having turned to shit during the Brian Griese/Jake Plummer/Jay Culter years. Maybe it's because Shanahan's offensive coordinator was Rick Dennison and his QB coach was Jeremy Bates? So much for the idea that he could put together a great coaching staff....
Of course Shanahan wants the job. No other team will hire him. If the Johnsons do, I hope that they get laughed out of the NFL, and wind up penniless and homeless.
In none of those last 3 seasons did the Broncos make the playoffs. In fact, in 9 of his 10 last seasons did they even win a playoff game, and I think in 4-5+ of them they didn't even make the playoffs. In Washington, 3 out of 4 years his team finished last in its division and only won something like 3-4 games a season. The only year that was good, was RGIII's rookie season.
The one positive to this is at least the Johnsons want to hire an experienced HC and no more of the novice HC insanity. Now if John Harbaugh will only become available, perhaps the Johnsons will want him instead of Shanahan or McCarthy.
Ownership is gambling on a Parcellian turnabout with a big name HC. If nothing else, it might give the fans hope that a quick turnaround is possible. Gotta give them credit for aiming high for once.
Again, not advocating for the guy, I'm just saying firing him wasn't any easy sell. If a our next HC won 2 Super Bowls with the Jets, how many 8-8 seasons would he have to have before the Jets would show him the door? That's all I'm saying. The Jets give 2-year extensions for 5-win seasons! Compare him to Marvin Lewis, who doesn't even have a playoff win, but gets 15 years to play at coaching.
If we want an experienced HC they are going to come w warts.Period.There is no perfect candidate w experience. You have to hope theyve learned & adapted from their past mistakes..otherwise youre back to looking at inexperienced novices w zero track record. Shanahan would be far from my first choice but i respect the hell out of him as a talent evaluator, play calller & offensive mind.Darnold fits his M.O perfectly & can totally understand why Shanahan would want into this job. Ill tell you this much,he’d fix the OL & odds are he’d do it utilizing non first round picks.Hes got an unbelievable eye for OL talent for his system. Now all the other stuff regarding RG3,cutler & the like..thats for others to fuss over..and perhaps theres credence to it.But this guy knows offense & gives bellicheat fits. Id take him over Del Rio & Pagano who La Canfora was just suggesting may returning to coaching given the anticipated vacancies
Shanahan hasn't been associated with NFL or College Football for 5 years. He's done. Let him coach high school football if he wants to un-retire. He shouldn't be allowed to coach after what he did to RG3.
the funny thing is that when people talk about top coaches they pretty much always have had a top tier QB so its very hard to tell how much of their success is down to coaching and how much the play of the QB John Harbaugh is one of the few that has had success without a great QB to rely upon. Colts averaged 12 wins a season with Manning in his prime coached by Tony Dungy Colts averaged 12 wins a season with Manning playing coached by Jim Caldwell Colts without Manning for the first time in an age - complete reverse - win 2 games and lose 14 Colts get another quality QB in Luck and go straight back to a winning record Anyone see a trend?
How many 8-8 seasons ? My guess would be 1. We’d be 8-6 and there would be some claiming if the coach isn’t fired they are done with this franchise.
I want no part of anyone that has been out of the league for years ala Gruden. I rather go with a young buck than Mike S. McCarthy is probably our best bet if John stays put. Or if we are not careful they might look at a gambling OC out in Panthers land with an opportunity to redeem himself for what he did to the Chargers.
Clearly Norv seems to be best suited as OC. His personality does not seem like a fit as HC material. I'm lighting a candle to the NFL coaches that JH gets released by the Ravens if he misses the playoffs and we pounce on him.
I think he is my first choice too. I have talked myself into and out of shanahan 20 times today. McCarthy right now would be 2 for me. Shanahan running a close 3 to Carmichael.
