http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/jets/post/_/id/14610/westhoff-best-kicking-competition-ever Westhoff: Westhoff doesn't usually joke around. He doesn't usually build up players like Rex does. These are interesting quotes especially if he is completely serious. Also, if the kicking competition is as good as he says, who will win?
C'mon, man. There's plenty of other threads where you can discuss the offensive line. It's a luxury to have competition at the kicker position. Just because it's an afterthought to the fans doesn't mean it's not important. In a toss-up, I'd just as soon give the job to Folk since he's been around for a couple years, but that's me.
If Brown is significantly better on kickoffs I guess i have to agree. However, I really want Folk to have another shot because fans have been constantly critical of him for the past 2 years even though he's a pretty damn good kicker. Remember the start of last year? He didn't miss a kick for at least 5-6 games. EDIT: Actually he didn't miss a kick until week 8 and kicked 11 or 12 in a row.
im taking brown for the reason stated above, and because brown has a larger body of work to show consistency. if they keep folk im actually going to be pretty pissed.
I really, really like Folk, however, he does not have the leg that Brown has. Either way, we can't go wrong, IMO
Folk is better at long range FGs (40+), but Brown in more consistent inside the 40. I'd go with Josh Brown just to avoid throwing my beer mug at the screen the next time Folk misses (badly) a 30 yarder or drops a kickoff down at the 15 yard line. Josh is balls inside 40, plus as wildaces pointed out has a longer leg on kickoffs.
Just a thought: We should trade one of these guys for a punter. I'm sure there's a team out there with a worse kicker than Folk and a better punter than Conley. There has to be one.
Not to be a Debbie Downer, but great competition just means neither is running away with the job. Yes, competition is great, but an outright competent kicker is even better.
Kickoffs should be the tie-breaker if they're so close to each other ... which pushes advantage towards Brown.
Would be an amazing move & turning one of the worst positions/weakness on this roster into a strength.
i would agree if westy hadn't said they are both having good camps. but the fact is they are both making kicks and both know 1 is going to get cut so every kick has the extra pressure needed to find out which one might crack in a game winning situation. so no,i can't agree with this and i think kicker will be right behind cb in lists of concerns this year
