As I said a couple of weeks ago, I had doubts about that happening even before this, so it seems to me that (especially considering the opposition) it would be a miracle if the Mets are over .500 at the All-Star break.
takahashi and valdez down - misch and dessens up beltran on the dl - Nando up Here is the complete transactions for today
If we're at .500 at the All-Star break, I don't see us missing the playoffs. Do we do it? I kinda think we do. And I have no reason to think that, but there you go.
Why the whole medical staff hasn't already been let go it beyond me. They're are now down to one solid hitter (Wright), and even he can't be depended on all that much because of his hot-and-cold streaks.
Besides Reyes, I don't know what you wanted the staff to do. Give Beltran bone bruise medicine? Give Delgado a vaccination before the season for a torn hip labrum? Most of it is just luck.
There are almost always warning signs for injuries; at the very least, if you spot it in the early stages, the guy just has to sit a few days and then can get back. I'm not saying it necessarily would have been that way with everyone, but at the very least they could have taken better preventative measures to shorten the time out by injury. This goes back for a while now; just look at the handling of Church last year. I remember reading about a stat about a month ago that over the past 3 years the Mets have led the league in manned games lost to injury by a pretty substantial amount. You don't get to that number just by sheer bad luck, especially over that long of a period. There's obviously something wrong somewhere down the line.
The Mets have truly become the Jets of baseball. But I'm not complaining. It's easier on the psyche to be a fan of a team that can only pleasantly surprise, instead of constantly disappoint.
