https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id...mekhi-becton-right-tackle-george-fant-play-lt Hopefully this will be his sweet spot. They obviously like Fant better on the strength of his play last season (edit: On the Left side).. This might just work out after all.
As long as Becton is okay with the move, and gets behind it, it's a good thing. I do believe that given his size - even though he is (or was) agile for it - playing RT won't "test" him as much, especially as he comes back from injury. Maybe down the road he returns to LT, but it's a common sense move right now and I'm glad to see that at least publicly Becton supports it.
This makes plenty of sense to me. Becton is probably the better player at both positions, but I assume the coaching staff thinks there is a greater drop off from Becton to Fant at RT than Fant to Becton at LT. The right side of the line is going to maul people in the run game.
But is there still an open competition for the LT spot? It sounds like the CS has already made a decision?
Left or right. I am rooting for Becton. He put in the work during offseason and he is ready to rumble. Loved his response when asked about the move. Hope he and AVT can dominate the right side and with Fant and Tomlinson anchoring the left side, we should have a monster running game thanks to Breece. Future seems bright. Hope OL is injury free.
I do like the idea of keeping AVT and Becton on the same side and it seems like Becton is open to the move so I think this is one of the best case scenarios here. I'm glad they didn't go through with the competition because I'd rather Fant and Becton get comfortable at their respective positions. We've seen how important reps (or lack thereof) can be for the OL unit as a whole.
I'm not opposed to this at all, but isn't a little disappointing seeing as how we drafted him so high to be a LT?
If he's productive and has a 10 year career it won't matter. A lot of top 10 LT's have failed and aren't even in the league after 3 or 4 years. I see your point but if it takes pressure off of Becton and keeps him playing at a high level then so be it.
I mean this was as obvious a move that any team could make. I, along with others said this was coming 6 months ago. Great news. Great plan. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
How often did the Jets run to the right side last year? It did seem like it was mostly gut runs with LeFleur. With AVT and Becton on the right side, Breece should find a lot of holes to burst thru.
No matter whether the reasons are unfortunate happenstances or the result of laziness or being out of shape, the plain fact is Becton has not been reliable thus far. You can’t have an unreliable player holding down the responsibility of protecting your most important player. Fant played at a very high level last year, especially when you consider how poorly the QB played. Becton is where he belongs for now. If he can stay healthy for a year or two he might be able to go back to LT when we move on from Fant.
This is an excellent move by our coaching staff. Fant was so much better at left than right tackle, it is perfectly logical to keep him at a position of strength, and let Mekhi slide over to RT for this season. I like our line; if the starters can all stay healthy, we can really have an improved running game, and give Zack a lot more time in the pocket.
That’s a cop out. If the coaching staff was truly making this decision based on what you are stating, they would have just said so instead of assassinate their top 15 pick through the media. It’s much easier to come out and say you like the combination of fant and Becton more than in reverse. They didn’t do that or phrase it that way. The move was clearly about Becton and it’s always been about Becton.
