http://www.fannation.com/si_blogs/nfl_tracker/posts/57042?eref=sircrc&eref=fromSI Representatives from 29 NFL teams were in Columbus on Friday for Ohio State's pro day, as a number of Buckeyes hoped to improve their marks from the combine. Defensive back Malcolm Jenkins did not improve and ran poorly again. Jenkins' 40 times ranged between 4.46-4.53 seconds on the Buckeyes' super-fast track. Usually, .07-.1 seconds are added to the times from the Ohio State pro day because of the fast surface. After the workout, Jenkins seemed resigned that he'll likely make the move to safety in the NFL, saying he'll take at it as a positive. Running back Beanie Wells showed marked improvement Friday. The big ball carrier had stop watches reading from 4.34-4.46 seconds before any adjustments were made. Wells said he worked hard since the combine to get his time down. He told the media after workout he stayed up as late as 10 p.m. some evenings to work on his start to knock off precious tenths. Three-time Al-American linebacker James Laurinaitis ran uninspired times between 4.68-4.78 seconds, while wide receiver Brian Robiskie was in the 4.5-second range.

JL looked a little slow on the cone drill and Robiskie looked athletic, though without the blazing speed we already knew he didn't have. Unfortunately for JL and Beanie but most of all Jenkins most of the OSU players ran faster, so it makes it look like its really the track. JL took around .2 off his 40 time but so did fellow LB Marcus Freeman. But Jenkins took very little off, that has to cause him to fall a little.
Would anyone care to tell me about fast tracks vs. slow tracks? I know at the combine, it almost looks like they're running on a tarp. Are they on turf or something at the combine and track material during pro days? BTW, draft Beanie. 4.59 was fine for me.
I saw clips from the Ohio State pro day. The surface Wells ran on there is more conducive to better 40 times than the surface he ran on at LOS.
Reading the title of this thread, I thought it was going to be more like Andre Smith's pro day than a good one. You had me thinking that he was smoking up instead of going to his pro day.
Living in Columbus, I've been to the Wood Hayes, the surface is lightning fast. I haven't been to the combine, so I can't compare the 2. Everything I hear, OSU has one of the fastest surfaces in the country. That's why Malcolm Jenkin's time is so discouraging. Jenkins should become a good Safety. Jenkins is a smart kid and plays like a coach 0n the field. Rex Ryan may like a player like Jenkins, cause Rex demands that his players on the defense know each player's assignment, Malcolm has that trait.
Some people are just not test takers they just have the on the field quickness or pure speed and you could never tell why.. maybe a big ass linemen chasing you can get your best performance
I don't care if he ends up a free safety, the Jets could use one. And I really don't understand why safeties are considered less important than CBs, they make around a third less and are drafted later. Whose helping his team more, Ed Reed or Champ Bailey? Asante Samuel or Troy Polamalu? So if Jenkins isn't a great CB he becomes a great FS, draft him.
I'd be fine with drafting Beanie or Jenkins with the 17th pick. How hard is it for a CB to transition to safety? Sure Jenkins was a great CB in college, but how do we know he will be a great safety?
It's not certain MJ will convert to safety and do well. Because of his lack of speed, Scouts are projecting him to Safety. Jenkins has the physical size, attitude and intelligence to be a very good NFL Safety. Jenkins supports the run very well, hit's the snot out of his opponent and reacts very well (which makes up for some of his lack of speed). He has all the tools to convert, there is some risk, but his body of work indicates he should make the transition. MJ will probalby never be a Pro-bowl player, but should become a solid reliable defender. The team that drafts Jenkins, will be happy with his play and not want to upgrade that position.......he will be solid, but not outstanding. If the Jets want a Safety with a huge upside...Louis Delmas is their man.
