Barry Bonds was indicted Thursday on perjury and obstruction of justice charges, the culmination of a four-year federal investigation into whether he lied under oath to a grand jury looking into steroid use by elite athletes.

The indictment came three months after Bonds passed Hank Aaron to become baseball's career home run leader. Bonds, 43, parted ways with the San Francisco Giants after the season.

While Bonds was chasing Aaron, a grand jury was working behind closed doors to put the finishing touches on the long-rumored indictment.

So 762 is the final number for Arod to aim at.

You can't play baseball in federal prison where he is headed. Not to mention the trial alone will be dragged out for years. Or that no owner in their right mind would ever give him a contract with this going on.

    Update.

Baseball superstar Barry Bonds was charged Thursday with perjury and obstruction of justice for allegedly lying when he said he did not use performance-enhancing drugs.

The indictment, unsealed Thursday by federal prosecutors in San Francisco, is the culmination of a four-year federal probe into whether he lied under oath to a grand jury investigating steroid use by elite athletes.

The indictment comes three months after the 43-year-old Bonds, one of the biggest names in professional sports, passed Hank Aaron to become baseball's career home run leader, his sport's most hallowed record. Bonds, who parted ways with the San Francisco Giants at the end of last season and has yet to sign with another team, also holds the game's single-season home run record of 73.

While Bonds was chasing Aaron amid the adulation of San Franciscans and the scorn of baseball fans almost everywhere else, due to his notoriously prickly personality and nagging steroid allegations, a grand jury quietly worked behind closed doors to put the finishing touches on the long-rumored indictment.

"I'm surprised," said John Burris, one of Bonds' attorneys, "but there's been an effort to get Barry for a long time. "I'm curious what evidence they have now they didn't have before."

The indictment charges Bonds with lying when he said that he didn't knowingly take steroids given to him by his personal trainer Greg Anderson. He also denied taking steroids at anytime in 2001 when he was pursuing the single season home-run record.

"During the criminal investigation, evidence was obtained including positive tests for the presence of anabolic steroids and other performance enhancing substances for Bonds and other athletes," the indictment reads.

He is also charged with lying that Anderson never injected him with steroids.

"Greg wouldn't do that," Bonds testified in December 2003 when asked if Anderson ever gave him any drugs that needed to be injected. "He knows I'm against that stuff."

Wow, just wow. You always knew this was a possibility, but you always kind of figured that it would be brushed aside in some way and never make it here. If he did lie, good for the justice system. I'm sure it's partly a witch hunt, but there looks like a lot of evidence against him.

San Quentin has a baseball team? :)

Amazing development -- never thought I'd see the day. What about the HOF? Will MLB acknowledge the HR record? I think they have to use that big fat asterisk, but what about the other players about to be named by Sen. Mitchell?

This trial should be quite entertaining. Move over, O.J.

Those are really good questions. If he is found guilty or attempts to cop a plea there will be a huge outcry to expunge every record he has. I think they will all be thrown out. If McGuire is involved, and Sosa, they will be too and we will revert back to Aaron and Maris as the HR kings.

Not for long on the career HR thing, because A-Rod is going to get there and he might do the single-season record as well. Hopefully for Tampa playing for the kind of miserable team he deserves.

AS well they should revert back to the records prior to the steriod explosion dating back to th 98 season. This shouldn't stop with just Bonds it should include Sosa and Mcgwire

How great is to see this Arrogant Prick named Bary Bonds finally get indicted!!!

Wow...yeah, I totally agree. The circumstances are just too coincidental.

I don't get why Anderson would flip now. What could they possibly have offered him that they didn't offer before?

No no. . . once the jury has indicted, there's no more justification for holding him in jail for contempt. He HAD to be released upon one of three events - the expiration of the grand jury, the indictment of Barry Bonds, or the conclusion of the grand jury without a true bill of indictment (which would never happen).

It could be that he cooperated, but we shouldn't assume that from his release. In fact, I would think that, having served as long as he has, there's little chance he cooperated.
