Hi all. Just want to bring this concern up. Both these guys are unrestricted free agents and I think bringing them both back should be priorities otherwise there will be 2 more significant holes. You don't want to stunt Geno's development by putting him behind a questionable offensive line. Austin Howard is very highly regarded in league circles and he will NOT BE cheap. Chalk this one up as a notch under Tanny's belt. Great find. But anyway the Jets need to be prepared to give him a long term deal. For a very solid and still young RT I expect him to get a contract in the neighborhood of 5 years/25 mill. Maybe more. Colon, he is just as important to have but might be cheaper because of older age and injury history. I think he could be had for a 2-3 year deal at 3-4 million per. Anyway I think the Jets should make it a priority to resign both these guys or they will absolutely suffer if they leave. You get what you pay for on the line and there is no easy way out of this. Geno will need time to find his presumed new weapons. I also bring this up for all of you to consider in terms of our SALARY CAP ROOM. These 2 contracts would (and should) eat a chunk of that, just keep it in mind. They say we will have about $30m in cap room well take about 7-8 off that just for these two. Plus there's Nick Folk. I think he should absolutely be resigned as he had nailed every game winning kick (including playoffs) he's been asked to make since becoming a Jet. Tough ones too (Dallas 11, TB, ATL, NE) this year. Trust me, you wouldn't want to lose him either although kickers in general won't break the bank even good ones like Folk but he should chip away at that room too. I think the Jets should be in no rush to give MoWilk a raise. They should learn from the GMen. Make him produce another year and then give him a reasonable long term deal or franchise him. Hey, it's a business. Give him a big raise next year added to Colon Howard and Folk then there is really not much room to sign more than a couple guys. No spending bonanza. Just throwing this out there for all of us to keep in mind when discussing what the Jets will be able to do in free agency. Resigning Howard and Colon has been totally missed in the convo but it's of high importance. Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk
We'll have about $50 million in cap room, not $30. Colon isn't necessary for next year as he isn't an above average guard, however, he could be had for about $1.5 million per year, which would allow us to draft bpa or at least have good depth on the o-line. You pay Wilkerson. I believe next year is his last year of his contract....you don't piss off one of the best young defensive players in the league by not ensuring him job stability. You don't take the chance he reaches Free Agency.
My top 4 priorities regarding our own players: 1) Extend Wilk now. he's the real deal and the price tag will only get higher. 2) Re-sign Howard. possibly the best Olineman we had this year. OT's are limited in supply, and high in demand. 3) Re-sign Folk. he's earned it, and we need a reliable kicker to help win these close ones. 4) Re-sign Colon. granted penalties are high with him, but his overall play was good, especially in run game. He's also possibly the biggest leader on the team, and we need a few vets like that. I'd guess he could be had for slightly above vet min. Make him compete for starting spot. If Winters and another draft pick/FA beat him out, he's quality backup. Cumberland, Winslow, Ducasse, Sanchez, Holmes should all be gone. Pace maybe another vet min 1 year deal. I'm on the fence there.
Colon made penalties no doubt but he was a very good run blocker and he brings some nasty attitude to the line which was welcomed. I think they should give him 2 years and you might be right 1.5 - 2 million might do it. But if he leaves, yiu have a hole. As for Howard 5 years/25 mill is an estimate on the low end. He will cost a chunk but I never heard anywhere that we had 50mill cap room I keep hearing 30-38mill depending on possible cuts. 50mill would be nice. I don't feel strongly about Mo either way I woukdnt debate. I just see how the Giants treat their free agents and they are shrewd. You can piss Mo off all you want, make him produce. He can be franchised. Ppl forget that was the big mistake which led to losing Revis. Tanny made a colossal error in giving him a clause that restricted the Jets from tagging him. This is the year to re-up Mo Wilk. You can take a good portion of his long term deal and front load it in 2014 with all the cap room this year. In 2015 and beyond he is locked in at a team friendly rate. Tanny was always backloading big deals and restructuring to get under the cap and the piper had to finally be paid the last 2 offseasons. Idzik won't make a big habit of this. As for Howard/Colon you can get them cheaper than that. Colon isn't in high demand and if they give him that type of deal I'd be disappointed in Idzik. Howard is probably in line for a Wayne Hunter type deal. 3-4 years at 12-14 MIL total. Idzik addressed O-line last year. He drafted Winters. He has planned for Colon/Howard departure. There's a reason he kept Ijalana, Campbell and Aboushi on the active roster all year to develop. They might not have been ready to play this year but in case Colon/Howard price themselves out he has some prospects waiting in the wings. Not saying they will produce at the Howard/Colon level but at least the team will have an evaluation of them to see if they can step in so Idzik doesn't have to panic and overpay like Tanny did with Wayne Hunter.
I'm all for bringing back Howard. Austin Howard is rated as one of the best RT in the league and there is no reason for him not to be back in Green n White. Colon needs to leave, he's a penalty machine and he would kill drives with those penalties. If he wanted to come back for the vet minimum I wouldn't mind it, but not at 3-4M. I'd rather see what Campbell or Aboushi could do before we started Colon again.
I like your post here and I agree .... One small thing though, they should absolutely keep Ducasse. Not a big deal but seriously he is still on his rookie deal and is a quality back up. He improved this year and while I will bid him good riddance when he leaves as he's been a huge dissapointment as a 2nd round pick, let him finish out his cheap rookie contract as a quality backup option should there be an injury. both should be brought back howard given a decent deal and colon should get the min. i know colon takes a lot of penalties, but like others have pointed out hes a leader out there on the field and brings the tenacity that an nfl line needs to run the ball successfully.
yeh vlad played his way to the bench by way of penalties IIRC. hes come in quite a few times though throughout the season and like is always said, if you dont hear his name hes probably playing pretty well. the line troubles this year were partly the qbs fault as well, its tough to protect when the qb backpedals because, well, the lineman is already probably in chase, so when the qb doesnt step up in the pocket and give the tackle a chance to get in between the qb and the defender pass rusher. also teams did not respect our receivers or qb all too much and there were a lot of guys playing in the box. anyway, i dont think we need to completely revamp the line, especially with how they started to play at the end of the season.
FYI there is breaking news here! Willie Colon tore his bicep on last game and recovery will last into free agency and beyond. Sadly this is good news for the Jets. As a vet, OTAs are not as pivotal and he can probably be had for cheaper and shorter being that there is some risk. Feel bad for Willie as it's money out of his pocket bc of injury but Jets should def bring him back for a bargain! Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk
Howard has been solid the last two yrs. He should be given a multi year deal. Not sure what to do with Colon, he is injured again. He was solid though and a good locker room guy.
I dont resign howard under any circumstances. Colon id bring back if the money is cheap, but letting both go would be my priority
I'd keep both guys just for the sake of having continuity for the QB. Let's continue to develop Campbell and Abosuhi etc. I'm on the fence about Vlad.
Ummm do you know that Howard has graded out as one of the best RTs in the league the last 2 years ? You wanna get rid of him? Who steps in ? Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk
Colon leads league in presnap penaltys ,he was decent when not causing a penalty if we think we can find a better option then don't bring him back
The Jets were also pretty high on Dalton Freeman, C/OG. They may add a vet in FA. I'd love to see them add Jon Asamoah, but doubt it happens. They may also draft another OT if they aren't that high on Ijalana or Aboushi after seeing them practice all season. In addition, if Idzik sticks to BPA, depending upon how the draft falls, the BPA in round 1 could be a LT and he might decide to go ahead and draft Brick's replacement now.
For those who dont know. Rich Cimini Guard Willie Colon seemed upset after game and didn't talk to reporters Sunday or Monday. Here's why: He tore a bicep, per source. #Jets Rich Cimini Lousy timing for Willie Colon, who will be a free agent. Recovery time will go into free agency period. Had a good yr for #Jets.
