I just hope Capelinni doesn't go the way of the Manish Mehta's of the world. Pumping out good articles and fading into a shitstorm of "unnamed sources". Its the same route that Manish took right after Dickhead Cimini left the DN

Holy shit, a well thought out and fair article?

I'll have to read it again to make sure, but that's what it seemed like.

I completely 100% agree with Capelinni on his views - well said and puts everything into perspective on how over-reacting fans can be in these situations. When it gets to the point that the fans run the asylum, the madness gives no clear path or direction. Fans need to let the organization fix and mend the broken parts their way - Ryan deserves that chance.

This seemed fair minded. It's also a positive looking forward article. And it explains a great part, most peoples problems with Rex are GM related based on speculation. If we are assigning the GM duties to the new GM, that should hypothetically clear out Rex's biggest faults

So Jeff Capelinni why the hell did Rex OK the Mark Sanchez extension if he wasn't the type of QB that fit the system he wanted to run????

Answer:Rex invented this new offense within the last two weeks in order to sell a new tale to Woody.

Some of this I dont really buy...

Up until this article, all Ive heard was that Rex Ryan pushed heavily for Mark Sanchez despite what the scouting department had to say... Now this might not be true, but its worth noting.

Im sure Rex would love a speedy breakaway RB... Wouldnt we all. But, knowing what we know, Im not sure he would address it over improving his defense if given the choice. Just look at the Stephen Hill pick. Rex straight up said "a wide-receiver? Not my dream pick". Why would this be any different?

In my opinion, Rex is far from a complete football man, at least yet. How has he proven otherwise, especially on the offensive side? What is so false in his description of "a tremendous defensive coordinator who knew how to light a fire and get as much as he could out of everyone, regardless of position." Thats certainly not a bad description either. How has he shown the ability to help choose the right personnel and coaching on offense? How has he chosen the right direction for the offense?

Why is it that all of a sudden now Rex wants an "attack-oriented offense"? How is it that this is what he's wanted all along? Stop making excuses for him.

He wanted a ground and pound offense. He came in here and thats what he preached since day one. Not an "attack-oriented" and aggressive offense. He wanted to run the ball and have a controlling offense so that his defense could shine. We ran the ground and pound pretty well for two years. Then after letting the offense go untouched in terms of adding real talent while the defense could maintain its play, it went to shit. Then we hired Rex's "mirror image", who is about as conservative as conservative gets. He didnt chose some pass oriented attacking offensive mind. He chose Tony Sparano.

But now this is what he has wanted all along? Gimme a break.

I am fine with the notion that Rex has realized that to win in the NFL, that an attacking offense is in fact what you need. But to just make excuses and say that this is what he is wanted all along is a joke.

Good points, a well written article. I guess we have no alterntive, but wait and see. Hopefully Rex learned something last season and will work on correcting it and himself

    Ok..

With the Hill pick I think it was more on point with how he felt with the player, not so much what side of the ball he is on. Sure he is defensive minded so he would love to be able to get the best defensive players all the time but I highly doubt he would intentionally neglect he offensive side of the ball just to have an amazing defense.

I did not like the Hill pick either, I still don't and there hasn't been anything to show that it was worth trading up in the second for him. He blew up the combine and had a lack luster college career due to the offense he played in at GTech. Looking back, picking an incredibly raw WR in the second probably wasn't the best choice considering our depth was shit to begin with. So for Rex to throw out the red flag and scratch his head at the pick kinda makes sense to me.

If you actually listened or read the presser, he said that he felt the ground N pound mentality went to far but it was something they went with because of the personal they have had on offense. You can't have an attacking offense if you don't have the players to execute that type of offense. Simple as that, which is encouraging because that should tell us that Rex will be strongly focused on the offense and the priority is to bring in players to fit that mold of offense. Which means we will be going after talented players at the skill positions.

That is the problem with a lot of you that are so against Ryan, you just don't think about the circumstances that caused all of this. You gotta think about the team, what was preventing the team from being successful? Then you can determine a lot of reasons for it, and I hate to break the news to ya, but the list of problems that led to the past two seasons are a lot greater than the HC of the NYJ. The only remedy to the problem is to break it down and infuse much needed talent on the offensive side of the ball.

Until that happens, no coach will ever be able to implement anything more than a run based offense because that is the type of personal we currently have on offense, and that has even fell off severely from the first two years.

I have been preaching a lot of the same things that this guy wrote about and it is refreshing to read.

    Thanks for posting this, Fozzi.

I dont dislike Rex Ryan. My biggest problem is the fact that Woody has basically let him start over (when has that ever been done before?) and has pushed him upon any GM that we hire (which Rex will have input on). I dont think that is a good idea at all, and it could very well have been what made Caldwell go to Jax and not us- he gets to pick his HC. Now, if the GM saw fit that Rex was the best option, then I have no problem with it as long as Rex has no input in the personnel.

The Hill pick- I dont like the pick either, I just think that he should have kept what he said to himself. It seemed a lot like he was disowning himself from the pick and placing all blame on Tanny and the scouting department. It didnt seem like a very leader-ish response. Im sure some of Rex's picks or player acquisitions haven't worked out in the past (John Connor to name an obvious).

I dont think he would intentionally neglect the offense either, but he may be neglecting it unintentionally? Who knows... But a lot of the focus of this organization and a lot of the player acquisitions have been more on the defensive side.

As for the presser, I caught about 75% of it. I just remain highly skeptical that Rex would have ideally liked an attack oriented offense rather than run the ball and control the ball on offense. Personnel may have dictated it somewhat, but that has been what he has preached from day 1. Thats what his family has been about and that's how he succeeded in Baltimore. Now if he wanted to be an attack oriented offense from day 1, why didnt he bring in an innovative OC last year that could have helped salvage the passing game and maybe Sanchez? Sparano was his coach.

What's holding this team back is a franchise QB and a good offense.

Now, I truly question Rex's ability to put up a good offense and develop a QB. He's struggled to do so in the past and Sanchez is trash now... Im assuming you do not really question this, because it seems as if you dont think much of the offensive woes fall on Rex, the HC of this team.

Also, please keep in mind that I do not think Rex is the one to place all of the blame on. Im just a little tired of people ridding him of all blame, especially for the offense. I just dont think thats true.

The Hill pick, was great. Go back and watch the film of weeks 1,9,10.

    The guy can play.

Like Sanchez, hes green to be sure, but he can play.

Seems like that's the Daily News way of doing things. Cimini did a lot of anonymous sources to stir the pot when he was with the DN too.

Rex reminds me of the kid who gets busted screwing up and promises his parents, " I know I was wrong, I want to change. Please give me another chance".

I don't buy any of this crap.

a sound reply. none of this scenario makes sense. when you have dismal ownership, you have no right to hope.

Ryan was forced into Schotty and as others have said, you can't fire someone after 9-7 + 2 PO wins, then 11-5 and 2 more po wins. Ryan failed on the Sparano selection.

    I agree with your sentiments.

From a draft perspective I would agree but most of the moves from the FA/trade perspective was on the offensive side of the ball. That was actually part of the problem with the WR carousel. Edwards, Holmes, Plax, Mason, Schillenz, Hill #2, Edwards part deux.

I mentioned earlier about the situation with Schotty. Rex does no get a pass on the Sparano pick. And several "football people" have indicated that Sparano ran a man blocking scheme with zone blocking personnel. That's a recipe for failure. All we can do is speculate as to why Rex allowed this. However, in his defense, he did try and bring Haley here and he was spurned for KC or PITT or someplace else.

No doubt. A top 15 QB and we will be singing the Jets praises again. I think given time he will be able to put together a good offense. He can coach, there is no doubt about that, and on both sides of the ball. I believe that because as you debated in an earlier post, he does get the most out of every player. The lack of talent on this team with paper thin depth, and 6 wins should prove that.

Rex's strength is NOT the QB position. This is where picking a QB coach and OC with proven track records should be #1 on the list. If I was in this position, I would give Woody some of my salary back so I could bring in multiple people to work with Sanchez and see if he could be fixed - Hackett, Steve Young, Pennington, Norv Turner, Mission Viejo HS coach, whomever. Put a team together to see if Mark can be salvaged. If not, blow up the personnel, prep for a 4-12 season. and draft a replacement QB.

Even with my admitted man-crush on Rex, there is no way I can absolve Rex of all the blame. He's the HC, he picked Sparano and Sparano brought in his people. Rex made a good choice with Dunbar and I hope he stays. If we had really big OLineman, I would think Googs would be a good line coach. However, based on our front 5, Callahan was probably the better choice. I would have promoted him to OC or went elsewhere to find a better based on my hindsight and what I have learned about zone vs man blocking on the OL.

Rex is going to be crucified, even by his biggest fans, if he brings in a shitty Offensive group of coaches and doesn't right the ship. If the running game gets going and the QB is the main problem - even with replacement or journeymen QBs, then that's the only scenario I can see absolving Rex of a poor Offensive performance.

It all starts with the QB, for every team. And until we get someone who's at least as comparable to Rivers or Romo, we will always struggle to score points. For the sake of the Franchise - cap wise, draft wise, personnel wise, I am hoping Rex can put together the right people to turn Sanchez around - not even to be elite, but to at least be Joe Flacco or Alex Smith.

This just plain BS since who hired Spro?

    Who picked MS?

Why no other then a guy named RR

Who picked other coaches who will totally incompetant?

    Why no other then RR

    Who plays the players?

    No other then RR

Now he begins year 5 by choosing another incompetant DC

The shame is WJ is just so utterly silly so that RR can roll him around his little finger

We will be wallowing around as a dreg of the NFL for some years to come sorry to say
