Was looking for this last night. The end of the 4th quarter and into OT was a complete shit show. As Oakland drive in OT 1st and 10 from their own 39, holding back it up 10 1st and 20 from the 29, run up the middle for 6 2nd and 14 from the 35, 20 yard pass, called back on holding 2nd and 24 from the 25, false start Oakland 2nd and 29 from the 20, 8 yard completion and at this point you are thinking Oakland is almost done, that is until unnecessary roughness on SD, 1st down Oakland Some more ugliness from there but they did end up driving down for a go ahead field goal. This all, in most probability, set up by a SD fumble with 4:48 left and them up by 5. They passed it to a guy who did not have a reception all year and he promptly fumbled with Oakland returning it to the 3. They go on to score the TD, 2 pt conversion to put them up by 3. Didn't have any bearing on any playoff scenarios but just completely ugly.
Hard to believe SD out gained Oakland 167 yds-13 yds in the 2nd half but Oakland out scored them 10-3
I could believe that the Raiders are slowly climbing their way to respectability (in Los Angeles?), but the Chargers really seem to be on their way down (in Los Angeles?). They're three games under .500 over the past six seasons, and Rivers has only had one exceptional year in the last five.
And we got blown out by this sorry Raiders team. That display in Oakland was the most effortless piece of crap I have ever seen. Ugliest game of the year for the Jets.
I mean with all due respect to Rivers he hasn't had much to work with the past couple seasons. Over that span he has 143 TD/76 INT (averaging 29 TDs to 15 INTs) while being sacked on average 36 times a year and completing 65.9% of his passes. Has he been amazing? No, but he's still averagely been a top 10 quarterback every year. His leading rushers have had: 2011: 1091 yards 2012: 707 yards 2013: 1255 yards 2014: 582 yards 2015: 641 yards They really need to change management there and build him an offensive line. It sucks to an extent that he's so heavily invested in his family life and not relocating that it will cost him a chance to compete for a Superbowl. They've been decimated by injuries this season but the Chargers seem like a black hole franchise at this point. I fully expect them to be in the 7-9 to 9-7 range next year because he's such a good player, and I think they're starting to build a quality defense if they can get guys like Te'o, Verrett, Kendall Reyes, etc. to stay healthy. I think they made a big mistake letting Gilchrist go, as Weddle may likely leave and that's Gilchrist's position (and he's much younger). I would absolutely love to see him with the Jets.
Terrible sequence of plays, but San Diego got absolutely screwed on that unnecessary roughness penalty. A quality form tackle by Perryman turns into a defenseless receiver call because the receiver ducked his head at the point of contact.
It was a good call, he led with the crown of the helmet, a quality form tackle he would have had his head up and the face mask would have hit him in the chest. That is how it is taught from the youngest of ages. Edit: Found a video on NFLRush http://www.nflrush.com/story/usa-football-form-tackle-defense/83
I'm aware, I played linebacker all my life. It's tough to make it appear as though you're leading with your facemask when the receiver ducks their body into the tackle. Of course as the offensive player curls up the crown of the helmet is going to be what makes contact with their helmet. It looked like he was trying to put his helmet right into the ball too which is exactly what is taught. If I remember correctly they ruled defenseless receiver rather than launching or leading with the helmet as I remember Simms and Nanyz disagreed with the call. I'd really need to see it again though. I understand the protection of players heads but I feel like sometimes the referees need to use their discretion sometimes. It's becoming impossible for defenders to make clean tackles when an offensive player can dictate what a penalty is based on how they approach the defender.
I haven't watched it again so I will just say it's possible it could be called either way, I just remember it being him coming in head down but I could be wrong. The rules these days make it harder and harder on the defender so that they almost have to make the perfect tackle so as to not be called for the penalty.
That explains the offense, the defense seemed like it was deflated after his injury. I had some serious questions about the mental toughness of this team after that game. Fitz or Geno, doesn't matter who's in there you have to play your best.
