A lot of talk around here about changing QBs, cutting guys, and firing coaches and the GM. My question is whether you are prepared to blow this thing up even if it means watching some terrible football for the next few years? I'm prepared to see Petty/Hack, even if it means we don't win another game this season. I'm also prepared to bench veterans like Revis, Breno, Skrine, Harris, Mangold, Gilchrist, let them go, and give their playing time and roster spots to younger guys. I'm fine with letting Sheldon and other FAs walk for compensatory picks, which means not signing high-priced veterans to fill gaps. It also means that I am prepared to watch a guy like Julian Stanford run around with no purpose for 60 minutes. Potentially, it means watching some REALLY bad football for a while in hopes that we can build something in the long-term. This question is especially pertinent for season ticket holders and those who attend games as they are the ones who get less entertainment value for their substantial financial and time commitment. I freely admit that I have very little financial stake in this team (Sunday Ticket and 1 game attended in 10 years) as I live too far away. My interest is largely emotional as it's easy for me to choose something else to do on Sundays. For those of your who are really invested, would you tolerate this? For how long?
The Jets these last few years were a team in the process of a rebuild, but had a few older veterans that were given the opportunity to make a playoff run. I'm glad the Jets did that because guys like Mangold and Marshall and even Fitz deserved that opportunity. But the vets have shown they couldn't execute and now its time to turn the page. Despite having a very good roster on paper, they continue to play softer defense than their talent level and the offense doesnt take care of the ball or execute in the Red Zone. This is either on the veteran players, the coaches or both. A few weeks ago I would have said its because Fitz has been careless with the ball, and Marshall drops the ball too frequently, but if they squared it away they could go on a run. I dont feel that way any longer. With the penalties and the inability to fix the same persistent mistakes coupled with the reports of players skipping meetings I think the coaching staff doesnt have control of this team. So now the question is do you change coaches. I'm on the fence right now, but Bowles hasnt shown anything this year. Everyone expected the Jets would have a mediocre record based on their schedule but they are getting blown out by the good teams and barely there against other bad teams like the fins.
Blow the whole thing up - no, but: - Gailey needs to go - TB needs to be on notice. He clearly is not in command of this team.
To a point yes... I believe that TB has lost the team already, i.e., undisciplined play of the team, people not showing up for meetings, arguing on the sidelines and the most telling... not showing up for entire halfs of FB games and when they do play its lackadaisical. Irrespective of what some players may say about Bowles, he has regress so badly that he has become a caricature of Kotitle's ineptitude. I want consistency as much as woody does ....but it really looks like this guy just doesn't have it as a HC and need to be replaced. That being said, I would fire TB now and elevate CG as interim HC... and elevate the OB coach. I would fire DC immediately and put COX in place for now.... Then I would tell CG that I was doing the following: bench underperforming people like Wik, like one hit - can not cover anyone- Pryor, or Gilchrist who seem to be lost, Harris who I like but is just to old and slow, I would move Skrine back to slot and play williams and forgot his name -drafted this year @ OCB. I would cut Breno cause he sucks and Revis and stated I believe he is finished and can not cover even as a FS, I would keep Mangold as a back-up and if he didn't want to play that way then cut him too.
I think that Jets fans don't get enough credit for being able to handle not winning, so long as it is clear that the team is being "blown-up" and rebuilt. No one in their right mind would equate losing while rebuilding to losing while sticking with aging veterans, including some who will clearly not be on this team next year. In fact, I think fans would welcome the move. The really frustrating situation is a guy like Wilkerson: He just got paid ALL THAT MONEY, and he is playing terrible football. What do you do with a guy like him?
Please blow it up,,,,The coach is bad we all see it and he does not get better or learn from mistakes ,,,,it is not even as if the team plays hard and just gets outplayed we could all live with that,,,the coaching staff has no answers,,and is stubborn to a fault ,the players are NOT accountablele see Fitz, see Revis and see the latest circus with MO and Richardson,,,,,yes blow it up from Bowels on down and MAC is on notice !
Being 3-6 isn't so bad, it's the way in which we've reached 3-6. Literally, almost every single thing about this team sucks minus the emergence of undrafted rookie wide receivers. * We succumbed to giving a journeyman backup QB 12 million and expected him to somehow repeat his miraculous performances of last season - Wasn't going to happen * We spent a ton of money to retool the roster 2 offseasons ago because we haven't' drafted well in years - those contracts have now come home to roost and when that happens, the holes left by bad drafting become worse. * We do not know if we have a franchise QB on this team because the coaching staff refuses to put them in * Our head coach made some really dumb mistakes, but also won 10 games last season which made people overlook his inadequacies last season. Those same faults appear to be 10x worse and there is a legitimate feeling around the fan base that Todd Bowles is either not head coaching material or he is not cut out for the New York market. * We have limited cap space, and aside from a few players, we still have some high level draft picks who have yet to have a profound impact on the team. * You can win in this league, but when you have the worst QB in the league, and a head coach who has lost the locker room in large part due to his own actions, you get a dumpster fire with a fanbase who is tired of losing season after season.
I am not defending Bowles, but did he really make that many mistakes last year? I don't remember this team last year lining up five wide every time there was a 3rd and 1 like they do this year.
Right now I just want them to try Petty, but if they can't make a simple decision like that, I think Bowles will have to go, unless it's Woody pulling the strings here. On the bright side, don't be surprised if Belichick loses his team. How many guys on his team are going to like the fact that he supports Trump? Ron
Agree 100% in dumping Gailey but I don't get why you just want TB on notice. What has he done to suggest he's capable of being a successful HC? I think he's right up there with the worst coaches this team has ever witnessed. Has he learned and grown as a HC since his 1st game as HC last year? No Has he had his team prepared to play each game? No Has he learned from his mistakes and shown it from game to game as a HC? No Has he made in-game and half time adjustments to win games and shut down the opponent? No Does he take command of the offense when things aren't going well to change it up? HELL NO Does he play his defense in the proper scheme for the opponent at hand? No Does he give players playing time based on merit rather than salary? No Does he motivate his team? Questionable at best Does he understand why his team fails when it fails as its happening? No Does he understand why his team lost the day after watching game tape? No Can he communicate to us and players how each can improve? I doubt it Is he a good talent evaluator of his roster? No Does he promote grow of younger players? It sure doesn't seem so Other than providing the same stupid as stone face smirk on the side line as the game goes along, win or lose what does he do that is a calming, leadership influence on his team? I don't see anything from him to suggest the players should respect him. I'm all for giving a new coach time to grow into the position "IF" they show a growth tracjectory over time. Bowles hasn't shown any such growth ever over the past 2 years, I think he's worse now than he was last year. The job of a HC seems completely over his head, he can't even get his defense to play anywhere close to its potential which is telling for a defensive guy. Rex was a fuck up but he knew it and knew what his and the teams short comings were. He couldn't do much to improve it but at least he was candid enough to the point where we knew what we had in him as a HC. Bowles is completely clueless, to the point that he can't even properly evaluate the job he's doing or his coaches. He's lost and needs to be put out of his misery.
I remember quite a few instances where he made some awful clock management decisions and also challenge decisions. In terms of coaching gameplan wise, he did much better last year I remember quite a few instances where he made some awful clock management decisions and also challenge decisions. In terms of coaching & gameplan wise, he did much better last year
To me the difference between Gailey and Bowles is that CG is already what he is, there is no change to be had. For TB, this is his 1st HC gig, so I'm still hopeful he could improve. That said, I won't cry if TB is gone; I believe in Mac's ability to select right HC more than in Bowles' ability to right the ship.
Jets fans are happy to accept failure as long as the team continues to neglect the most important positions on the field and hire new failures at head coach every 2-5 years. It's why Woody Johnson continues to roll his little pink mole rat body around in the happybucks year in and year out.
Blow it up. Lots of talent at the QB position in the 2018 draft. Here's my plan: -Can Bowles -Hire an offensive mind -release most of the vets: marshall, revis, harris, fitz, anyone who has a problem with the youth movement... -draft and sign as many ham sandwich offensive lineman as possible -break up the doofus duo Wilkerson & Richardson, getting rid of whichever one gets a higher return in trade -Play Petty/Hackenberg next season no matter what If you suck in 2017, you get yourselves a franchise QB in Lamar Jackson or Jake Browning. If you dont suck you know you got your QB already. win/win --- This is what they'll really do: Keep the entire coaching staff: Woody will justify it by saying they had lots of injuries Sign Tony Homo: they need to make a splash Draft a Corner with our high 1st round pick, ignoring offensive line until day 3 of the draft
I'm not for changing Mac, the one thing I would like Mac to change is, his desire to draft a QB with a 2nd round pick in any draft in the future. I'm ok for getting rid of TB and this CS, it's just not good. Bring in Kyle Shanahan as jets HC and let him work with developing either Hack or Petty and ask him to run a balanced offensive scheme wich would include a TE. Start pruning off some of the older players with big contracts. Revis, Giacomini, Harris..etc Trade Wilkerson or Richardson, and please run the defense that you have the personnel for, which in our case is the 3-4. Please start building this team from the trenches in, especially on offense, whether they draft or sign a FA, it should be a stout OL. I'm ok with Enunwa, Peake, Anderson as the 3 WR going forward.
I can only hope I don't even recognize the team next year. Talking complete do over, perhaps, with the exception of Mac. I wanted to blame Woody for a while but it hard to blame the guy. He went all out with consultation before he made the moves he did.
It's a few different things at work here. 1.) Woody Johnson doesn't truly care about the fanbase or a winning product. This is more a of a side hobby for him. He's not a football lifer like a Rooney, Jerry Jones, Kraft, Davis, Mara, Elway/Bowlen, Richardson and a few other owners in the league. 2.) He says F you to his loyal season ticket holders all the time. I unfortunately am one of those. He advertises locally on the NY stations all the time and offers non-season ticket holders tickets at half the price of what we loyalists give to him as part of a long term investment in his product. He also charges for training camp, player sessions and other Jets marketing events that some other franchises don't. There's really very little appreciation by Jets ownership here. 3.) It's the largest market in the country and Woody knows that he'll make his money regardless of a good or bad product. There are too many "average" fans that aren't true Jets lifers like most of us on this board who will fill most of the stadium every weekend. So therefore he doesn't feel the need to go above and beyond to build the best product possible. 4.) The FO needs to be held more accountable on draft picks. Too often we all want to play armchair GM which is fine and our right as fans. However I can't say this enough, the Jets are not smarter than the other 31 teams in the league and it definitely shows in their usual draft results. When most people have top prospects on their board each year and the Jets go in a completely opposite direction and take no names like Dexter McDougle and shaky prospects like Hackenberg then the GM must be held accountable. There are many more examples of bad draft picks in the top 3 or 4 rounds with this team but I'm just throwing out a few. Anyway, enough of the rant. Bowles most likely won't get fired as he won 10 games last year and this has been a bad year by all involved. But next year should be his make or break year and Mac better start drafting some real impact guys. Other teams draft impact rookies every year and I don't get why it is so hard for this franchise to do. If Bowles sucks next year then blow it up and try to grab that franchise QB.
