Lots of posters want to get / think we'll get Mangold. Consider the overall draft position of first Center drafted in the last 10 years: Year, Round, Overall Pick 2005, 1, 26 Chris Spencer Seahawks 2004, 2, 45 Jake Grove Raiders 2003, 1, 21 Jeff Faine Browns 2002, 2, 44 LeCharles Bentley Saints 2001, 2, 50 Dominic Raiola Lions 2000, 2, 60 Brad Meester Jaguars 1999, 1, 17 Damien Woody Patriots 1998, 2, 58 Jeremy Newberry 49ers 1997, 3, 76 Rod Payne Bengals 1996, 2, 60 Michael Cheever Jaguars Thus, first C normally picked beginning of second. (average draft position is 45.7) Historically, #29 is a bit early. We are in perfect position to pick him up with #35
I'd say there's a 90% chance he's gone by #35. Steelers at #32, and Saints at #34 will both be in the hunt for him. If we want him, we have to take him #29 (that is, if he's still available).
I think with the 'historical' look at the draft we are in a position to take him, but thats not how you look at the draft. Mangold is a better center prospect at this point I would argue then Faine was the year he got drafted. Nevermind picking him up with the 35 we are very lucky if he is there at 29.
No reason to take a center that high. You can find a decent center in the 3rd or 4th round and coach him up. You don't need the most athletic or gifted center.
