The Jets have 12 picks in the draft, more than any other team. How many of 12 draft picks would still be on the roster come opening day? Despite his steady approach, there is no reason to believe Idzik won't trade in the draft to get who he wants. He didn't last year, but supposedly things fell so that they were able to get 2 of their top guys anyway. Let's look at the roster, and see what adding 12 new players means. I divided the roster into 3 categories, guarantees to make the 53 man roster, debatable makes, and misses. Out of the misses, I put the those that were toughest to cut at the top. I only fill 41 roster spots because 12 will supposedly be filled by draft picks. Makes: Geno Smith QB Michael Vick QB Chris Ivory RB Bilal Powell RB Tommy Bohanon FB Eric Decker WR Stephen Hill WR Jeremy Kerley WR David Nelson WR Jeff Cumberland TE D’Brickashaw Ferguson OT Brian Winters OG Nick Mangold C Willie Colon OG Breno Giacomini OT Muhammad Wilkerson DE Damon Harrison NT Kenrick Ellis NT Sheldon Richardson DE Leger Douzable DE Quinton Coples OLB David Harris ILB DeMario Davis ILB Calvin Pace OLB Dawan Landry S Antonio Allen S Dee Milliner CB Demitri Patterson CB Kyle Wilson CB Darrin Walls CB Ellis Lankster CB Nick Folk K TOTAL: 32 Close Makes: Matt Simms QB Dalton Freeman C William Campbell OG Oday Aboushi OT Antwan Barnes OLB Nick Bellore ILB Garrett McIntyre OLB Jaiqwuan Jarrett S Tanner Purdum LS TOTAL: 9 Misses: Clyde Gates WR Jacoby Ford WR Josh Bush S Mike Goodson RB Caleb Schlauderaff OG Troy Davis ILB Ras-I Dowling CB Konrad Reuland TE Zach Sudfeld TE Tevita Finau DE Alex Green RB John Griffin RB Greg Salas WR Ben Ijalana OT Jermain Cunningham OLB Jeremy Reeves CB Vidal Hazelton WR Dwight Jones WR Saalim Hakim WR Michael Campbell WR Chris Pantale TE Colin Anderson TE Jacolby Ashworth C Patrick Ford OT TJ Barnes NT Tim Fugger OLB Rontez Miles S Brandon Hardin S Lowell Rose CB Johnny Patrick CB Nick Taylor CB Without accounting for any UDFA's that make a mark, I already think it looks like at least 1 trade up is in order. I love that we have three picks in the 4th, and I'm not talking big time first round trade up but why not turn 12 picks into 10 picks be able to move up in the 3rd or 4th and get a guy we think is great? Also there will be guys waived from other teams that we won't want to miss, and CJ2k takes up another roster spot if he is signed. Maybe it's just me but I see at least 1 trade up on the Jets' radar.
I'm hoping for a trade back in round 1, then if someone strikes our fancy in rounds 2 or 3, we trade up. ideal scenario: - trade back to 23-24, get an extra second or third. draft Cooks/Beckham - IF available trade up for Dee Ford in the second, then take either Antonio Richardson or one of the guards with our other second. I would also consider a trade up for Jimmie Ward. another scenario is don't trade back in the first, and trade back in the second round to a later pick and get someone like Troy Niklas while scooping up an additional third. I think we will do some kind of a trade, I just hope it's not for the wrong players.
I wouldn't get too excited anticipating trades, this isn't the Tanny era. The more picks we have the more likely we will find a diamond in the rough in the later rounds.
The bottom of the roster is shit, we need to improve the entire roster. I don't see any trades for the Jets.
I certainly agree that we should keep most of the picks, but do have a bit of ammo to move around with our 4th and 6th. Twelve just seems like overkill, at least the 12 we have. What's the point of four 6ths if two could be cut in camp. We already have some of last years later rounders just parked taking up roster space, eventually you have too many projects. Not advocating anything crazy, but we could figure out a way to get another third out of all that mess in 4-7.
I don't want to give up any of the 4th rounders, or anything, but I consider 3 of the 6ths and the 7th as at least potential trade resources to move up in either the 3rd or 4th if there's a guy they really like. We will only be able to unload 1 or 2 at a time which means a trade up, no team would want them as a package for a higher pick. I'd rather have a 3rd or 4th rounder they are high on than 2 extra 6th rounders.
It's amazing how often people suggest this on this board. It's like people that don't know you can't trade the picks just ignore everything that's said here ha.
There are also practice squad positions to consider in addition to the 53 man roster. What is that like 7 more?
Good point, but only some of these players are eligible for it even. The OP brought some good questions into mind. Some guys on his exiting list are guys I've been waiting, and anticipating to see how they step up this next year. We'll have to all do some projections for the roster in due time.
Practice Squad guys are a wash because anyone can sign them off the squad and you don't spend a draft pick on a guy you plan to make available to anyone. Practice squads are easily built of UDFA's every year.
I would not be surprised to see Hill get moved during the draft. I definitely would not put Nelson as a lock to make the roster. At best he is a toss-up.
I do too. He's under contract, and one of the few guys we randomly gave a chance to that's made a difference in games. He's obviously just a role player type WR, but he is a great team player, who plays with the fire Rex likes in his players. Right now he's the 3rd best WR on the roster. Even if we add 2 more wideouts, he's solid depth at worst.
I dont think we will be trading in this draft UNLESS it's a perfect move down situation on day 1 OR we love a kid on day 2 and move up with a late pick to grab him.
Right now the depth chart would be Decker 1 Hill 2 Kerley 3 and Nelson/Salas/gates competing for the 4 with Ford at 5 as the KR. After the draft it is likely that the depth chart will be Decker 1 Rookie/Hill 2 Kerley 3 Loser of Hill/Rookie 4 Nelson/Gates/Salas competing for the 5th. If Ford ends up our KR that endangers Nelson's spot. If we draft 2 WRs that endangers his spot. Then its also quite possible Gates and/or Salas beats him out. But then again its also possible we move Hill. Nelson making the roster is no sure thing and at best looks to be a number 4 next year. Idzik really liked Salas. The CS really liked Gates. Both arguably have more upside as #4 then Nelson.
I would guess that Idzik trades back in the first, gets Lee/OBJ/Cooks/Dennard/Gilbert. Than uses the returns in that trade to trade back into the second so we walk away with like Kyle Van Noy/Amaro/Jordan Matthews. I think the goal this year is to get as many picks as possible, it increases the odds of finding that late round steal. Edit: I don't think Clyde Gates has anywhere near the amount of upside as Nelson. Gates is trash, he's proven that a few times.
I'm not sure Idzik really liked Salas, I didn't see that anywhere, and the coaching staff may have liked gates back in the 2012 offseason but he hasn't shown enough to be taken over Nelson. Gates and Ford will be made irrelevant if we draft OBJ as he is a better kick returner than either. We will probably carry 6 guys at WR, Decker, Rookie, Kerley, Hill, Nelson, Rookie/Gates/Salas/Ford.
