And I say this based on the free agent signings thus far: Defensive Tackle - Kinlaw Backup Quarterback - Taylor Guard - Simpson Placekicker - Zuerlein Safety - Clark Cornerback - Oliver Six Signings, and only ONE of them is a potential opening day starter on the offensive side of the football. Joe Douglas is doing nothing to fill me with confidence right now.
One day has passed. There's still an entire draft. There's trades that will undoubtedly happen as FA unfolds and teams have a clearer draft plan. I think Douglas has blown it way more than he's nailed it but this is some real SOJF stuff.
Let me ask the same question back to you: Outside of the Running back position (No need to improve over Breece Hall), Who signed elsewhere on the offensive side of the football that would not be an upgrade to this offense?
That's kind of a foolish question. You want an interior lineman for $20 mil a year? Because that's the only spot where a player was signed that would have been a clear upgrade over what we have. Giants signed an LT but there's a better one on the market still. If we lose out on him, then I'll be worried.
Is it more foolish than spending the same $20 on a defense that was already crowned as "Elite" by so many experts?
I get being frustrated right now but we're less than a day into the tampering period of FA. Outside of maybe Jermaine Eluemunor and Nick Allegretti, there hasn't been a contract given out that I've seen and thought, "damn, wish the Jets had done that". There's still plenty of talent left at OL and WR, so as long as the Jets have another 2 good signings at either of those positions up their sleeve, I'm fine with where we're at.
Defensive Tackle - Kinlaw Safety - Clark Cornerback - Oliver While the exact details of their contracts have not been made public yet, I'm guessing that their total cap hit to next year will be between 15-20M Do you think it is wiser to spend 15-20 M next season on these three players to bolster a defense that was already touted as "Elite" or on the aforementioned interior lineman, potentially addressing the single biggest weakness on this team?
I will ask the exact same question yet again. Who would you have signed that has already been signed that doesn’t have a comparable alternative currently on the market? and if your answer is “I would’ve spent $20 million on an interior lineman“ then there’s not really a true conversation to be had here.
I think that's why they've been bargain shopping the first day, to make sure they have enough money to grab a few more guys for the offense over the next few days. We should have a better idea once the specifics of these contracts come out.
Wow, so unless there is FULL agreement, there is no reason to debate our arguments. This is a chat board, isn't it? Sorry I failed to meet your standards.
And you may be proven correct. All I can do is look at the moves made so far, and draw conclusions based on past similar decisions, which ultimately leads me to feeling quite negative.
Which, like I said in my first response, is fair. Was just trying to point out that we're still very early in the FA process and there are a lot of good options still out there to upgrade the OL and WR positions.
You can have the discussion all you want but I can’t take it seriously if your mindset is “it doesn’t matter who the player is or how much money they make or if there are still players available at those positions, if they could have helped the offense then Joe Douglas failed by not signing them“. Not interested in discussing things with someone who holds that opinion. Just not for me.
I'm questioning to need to spend any money whatsoever on the defense. Even with the loss of Huff, who is a terrific player, that would downgrade an "Elite" defense to "Excellent" or at worst "Very Good". Would you describe the Jets offense at present time as "Excellent" or even "Very Good"?
