I'm interested in starting a league that uses this style of draft instead of the usual snaking random draft position nonsense that I'm used to normally. Has anyone been in an auction style draft? Is it any good? What website did you have it on?
I did it last season, I loved it. However, I did it offline, so everyone went to someone's house to do it.
Yep...I've been in an auction style draft since 2001. My buddy runs it, and customized his own web page for it (he doesn't use Yahoo or Espn or any of the other big name FFL pages). What we do is: 1) Each owner is given a 35 million dollar salary cap 2) we draw positions to see which group of players we auction off first (each year is different...last year we started with Kickers and ended with QB's) 3) the bidding starts at 500k, and works its way up from there. 4) after the draft, any players that are left over are put on waivers, and can be picked up for 100k per player. 5) it's a head-to-head type draft. I will post the draft url once my buddy gets back to me....it has all the rules and additional info...so you can poke around at your discretion.
A live / offline auction draft is just about the best part of fantasy football. I have done about 5 which took place at a buddy's house along with a BBQ. We simplified things with each team getting $100 to fill out there roster. Unlike djak, we went let each owner introduce whatever player they wanted with a opening bid of at least $1 when the round got to them. This added a little bit of strategy in as you could just introduce players that you knew other owners were hot on and get them to spend there money early. In this scenario, top 10 RBs went from $20 - $40. Top QBs capped out at $20, Top WRs in the teens. My strategy was to get one RB early (as they were typically introduced in the first or second round) and then introduce QBs to try and get people to spend $$ unnecessarily. It is amazing the bargains you can get in the later rounds. One funny story from a couple of years ago. The round got around to my friend Paul. About 5 or 6 QBs were off the board and Paul says, "Marc Bulger, $15." This was followed by dead silence and Paul quickly realized that his opening bid was a bit "strong." So, it is best to start players at $1 early as you can always bid up (with some exceptions in the very late rounds.)
^ Actually, our draft is pretty similar to BlairThomas#1's draft....we draw positions from a hat...for example, HB's....and then each owner throws a name out there for auction....and we go through a bunch of HB's till everyone's roster has enough of them..and then draw the next position. anyways..here's the url to our draft...feel free to peruse. http://www.cormsinteractive.ca/ffl/
Great information. It seems that everyone who tried this form of draft loves it more then the traditional style. Looking forward to trying something new this year...thanks fellas
