Thinking about taking next summer off and driving to Cali to see some folks. Anyone have any experience with RVs? I'm gonna murder the wife before I back out of the driveway, so I won't need a big one. Class B I'm thinking, but I really have no idea what the fuck I'm doing. Just want to spend some time on the road while gas is still cheap as fuck and see some of this big, beautiful messed up country of ours while I'm still able to enjoy it. Any advice appreciated. And for you assholes:
Did 5 weeks many moons ago. Country and places are prolly different even. Straight south to N. Orleans, then across the south to Cali and up the Cali coast. Loved it. Had a travel guide/brochure for all the campgrounds and places to plug in and that helped.. Really liked it and found the life style very relaxing. Loved the SW, stayed at the South Rim and hiked down for the night- that was brutal to get back up the next day. Shoulda taken a donkey on a tour. Monterey peninsula was cool, along with Carmel and San Fran. Almost got snowed in in Wyoming in a blizzard in February and had to beg a closed campground owner to let us stay the night. It was actually scary and there accidents along rt 80 that day. That was an adventure in itself, lol Three people drove tho to make that a little easier to cover territory, but some of the campgrounds were nice and peaceful to stay at.
I don't remember the classification or brand even, but I'll search and post a pic of the type. We rented it.
Something very similar to this, prolly a little bigger actually. Four people. I guess it's whatever you're willing to spend, and how it all fits with what you want to do and how it works logistically
Man,sorry I don't remember. I was in school and my friend picked it up and handled the actual transaction and brought it back after we returned.
We went small so we can get way off the beaten path - I'm not a big fan of RV parks. It's easier to drive, store, and maintain. The added bonus is having a truck to drive around when I'm not camping. Once we get our house paid off next year, I'll be getting a new truck to replace the '95 F150 which gets horrible mileage and makes me worry about break downs in the backcountry.
I am seriously considering just getting a 28-30' Class A when I sell my house and just hit the road for a couple of years. Me and the wife took a 28 day road trip over the summer, hit 17 states and did over 9000 miles. We did it in the SUV though with a little camping and a lot of hotels. It was just a test run to see if we could be in the same vehicle for so many miles without killing each other. We have the National Parks Pass so get in the parks free and discounts on camping. I was checking and it is generally between $17-$25 a night including electric and water for an RV spot, figure if we are spending 1-2 weeks at each spot it would be cheap living and even gas wouldn't be bad since we would only be driving 3-4 days a month.
