I turn to the TGG faithful with a dilemma. I was recently cleaning out a late family member's basement and came across this lot of 16 vintage baseball/football cards. All high grade stuff - every one is a PSA 8. Here's the catch: all but one have some sort of case (not card) damage. It's as if the box was run over by a truck at some point. Now to the dilemma...what's the best way to get rid of these without settling for pennies on the dollar? I did a quick search of completed eBay listings and some of these cards have sold in the $80-$100 range recently. How much will the PSA case being damaged affect the resale value? PSA will re-case them for $5 a piece...is it worth it, or should I just sell the whole lot as-is? I'm not looking to get rich...but I'd also feel guilty just giving them away. Any insight would be greatly appreciated! Here is an itemized list of the cards, and a few photos. 1956 Topps Hoyt Wilhelm #307 NM-MT 8 02052162 1 inch crack along top left corner of back side of case. 1956 Topps Ted Kluszewski #25 NM-MT 8 05520460 No case damage. 1958 Topps Carl Furillo #417 NM-MT 8 30232728 1 inch crack along top left corner of back side of case. 1958 Topps Stan Palys #126 NM-MT 8 11457824 Superficial abrasion to outermost right edge of the case. 1958 Topps Billy Muffett #143 NM-MT 8 90059285 1 inch crack along top left corner of back side of case. 1958 Topps Chuck Essegian #460 NM-MT 8 30300005 Superficial abrasion to outermost right edge of front side of case. 1959 Topps Bill Renna #72 NM-MT 8 01756485 Two inch crack along left edge of front side of case. 1959 Topps John Romonosky #267 NM-MT 8 02505718 Superficial abrasions to outermost right edge of front side of case. 1959 Topps Hank Foiles #294 NM-MT 8 03705796 Numerous chips and abrasions to outermost right and bottom edges of front side of case. 1962 Topps Los Angeles Rams #89 NM-MT 8 05503084 4 inch crack across front of case. 1963 Topps Jimmy Hill #153 NM-MT 8 90103864 Superficial abrasions along outermost edges of case. 1964 Topps John Hadl #159 NM-MT 8 30257002 4 inch crack along front of case and small chip out of outermost bottom left edge of front of case. 1964 Philadelphia Fran Tarkenton #109 NM-MT 8 09019574 5 inch crack along front of case and small chip out of outermost bottom left edge of front of case. 1965 Philadelphia Bill Glass #33 NM-MT 8 40206194 Two 5 inch cracks across front of case. 1965 Philadelphia Clarence Childs #116 NM-MT 8 40206190 5 inch crack across front of case. 1967 Philadelphia Los Angeles Rams Insignia #96 NM-MT 8 30249820 5 inch crack across front of case.
I don't collect vintage cards but I have a decent memorabilia collection and while it shouldn't effect your resale but if you're putting them up for bid on a website people might be hesitant to pay serious cash cause they might think the card is damaged. BTW wanna send me the Fran Tarkenton ....lol
I have a pretty large vintage baseball collection, but not too much graded. Cards are not selling at all right now,so ebay will get you at best 1/4 of beckett. I would have the good ones recased, but not all of them. I don't know if there will ever be a memorabilia boom again. The last time it happened was McGwire/Sosa,and they overkilled the market with cutting up jerseys etc, just like they do everything else. If it ever does come back, the $5 would be worth it,as collectors will be looking for commons etc to complete sets.
Thank you, this will be very helpful. Going down the list, what cards would you consider the "good ones"?
Definetly the Wilhelm,Kluszewski,Furrillo,Tarkenton,. Definetly get a beckett monthly (if they still have them) and check the numbers. The grading co might even give you a deal to do all of them.
