Colts have advised Luck not to throw at the combine http://www.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/22475988/34944753
Colts advised him not to throw? I don't think I have ever heard of that before... agents sure, but a team? That just seems weird...
I can think of a couple of reasons. First, his value is never going to be any higher than it is right now. If he goes out to the combine and doesn't blow people away it could give people some things to pick on and try and knock the price down on a potential trade. The other reason would be to avoid any potential injury (as unlikely as that may be).
I see. That makes sense in a conventional way but I don't see any circumstance where the Colts would trade the pick or Luck away.. And if the Colts are afraid of injury then Luck is a liability and his injury would save them from picking him first and dealing with injuries for the future..
The Colts would trade Luck if their internal assessment of him was that he was not a lock to be a great QB but everybody else was treating him as though he was. In that situation they keep Peyton, make a deal for Luck and draft Peyton's replacement partly with the proceeds of the deal. Let's say that the Colts thought RGIII was a better prospect. In that situation they trade the Luck pick down a couple of slots for a King's ransom and then they hope RGIII is there on the 3 or 4 for them. Alternately they might look at taking Barkley next year using the proceeds of the Luck deal.
Fair point but that would be some blockbuster shit. It seems most people follow the general consensus and I have seen little to no naysayers on Luck. The most I've seen is RGIII is as good or close to as good as Luck.
Imagine getting RGIII and a 2nd this year and a 1st and a 2nd next year out of Minnesota or Cleveland for Luck. You make the deal the same way that the Chargers and Giants did, with the Colts taking Luck on the #1 and then waiting to see who landed RGIII on the 3 or 4. That would be like instant rebuild in Indy and they still have Peyton to keep the fans happy this year.
When was the last time a consensus top 5 pick QB did throw at the combine? The top QBs always skip the combine.
Good, he shouldn't throw. As for why, I lean towards the why give anyone reason to criticize him idea.
If he's not going to throw at the combine, does that mean he also won't throw on his Stanford Pro day?
He'll throw then most likely. It'll be his own regiment of throws with his own WRs on his field, so it'll be ideal conditions.
