The last draft we went to the trenches and look at the results it gave us. Amobi Okoye would be a solid pick even if we had to move up to get him. The kid is real young at 19 years old and is already 3-4 nt size at 6-1 320. He could turn into a serious force in this league and be the core of our defense for over a good decade.
Well he's young enough to where he can still put on weight and we need a Nt so if this guy falls to us the Jets will have to consider taking him.
As of right now, having very little info on anyone, he's my favorite player in the draft. I reserve the right to change my opinion, but I like the way he sums up football in this interview: http://www.kentucky.com/mld/kentucky/sports/special_packages/college_football_preview/15330004.htm "techniques, he says, its all about techniques." Spoken like a true Mangini disciple.
personally, I believe he will be there for us at 25, and possibly even at 37. I have been saying we should draft him for months, and I still do. Even with the emergence of Robertson this year, I would still take him
I know Okoye is listed as large, weightwise, but he really doesn't look any bigger than Dewayne Robertson. I was impressed with his athleticism, but I think his value lies in a 4-3, gap-shooting front. I personally see him going to the Giants. This is not the best defensive tackle crop, and he may not last. -X-
Obviously, right now most of us are going on pretty spotty information, but I wonder why you think he would be good for a 4-3. The various sources I have found agree that he is stout, but does not have much of a burst, which seems to be perfect for a NT. It's true, he seems to be quite similar in height and weight to Dewayne, who some would argue is not fit for a 3-4, but a three man front line of Dewayne clones would be pretty sweet in my book. Honestly, I don't know. I don't know where they plan to play DRob next year, I don't know where Pouha fits into their plans or where KVO fits in, but I just imagine that if the guy can go from 5-9 185 to 6-1 317, he can probably find a way to get to a casey Hampton-esque 6-1, 330.
I would have no problems with D-Rob and Ellis at end and this fellow at tackle. I haven't seen him play but everything I read has been good. That would be a pretty heavy line, and D-Rob and Ellis certainly have the talent, except D-Rob seems a little out of position at NT in the 3-4. As for Pouha, I don't know if Mangini will keep him around. He was a Herm pick, so Mangini has no loyalty to him, especially since the guy didn't contribute his rookie year and was hurt this year. The claim of him being a "reach" seems to have solidified itself.
Rankings will change so much between now and the draft, I don't see how we can say where anyone is going to go. I mean, Peterson could run a 4.6, calvin Johnson could have stenosis, Quinn could be caught with a Nate Newton-esque stash in his car (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2059715)
I would take Amobi Okoye in a second. I read about him coming out of HS. The kid is insanely intelligent, very physically gifted, and a student of the game. Not to mention his age. Which means he will only get better, I'd expect a rapid improvement after his first yr or two in the league. I remember reading that when he first arrived at Lousiville the coach's were hesitant to let him participate in all drills all the time. but he ended up being the most intensive player during his first spring there at the age of 16. or 15. either way this kid is going to have nothing but the best ahead of him. id take him in a heartbeat with our first. i wouldnt count on him to be there though cuz theres just too much room for this kid to improve upon what is already a solid prospect.
