I'd rather put the ball in the hands of Marshall, Decker, Owusu, Kerley, or Devin Smith than rather give pass plays to Jeff Cumberland. I don't mind that our TEs are not getting open or not being thrown to. I don't want them to be. Our playmakers are at the WR position and putting the ball somewhere else would be a waste of a play. The TEs on our team should be used solely as blockers and decoys. The story is different if they officially move Quincy Enunwa from WR to TE. Enunwa would actually make for a pass-catching option there. For now, there's no playmakers there.
It makes sense. I don't really care either. The main thing is lacking that target that's as close to Fitz as a TE would be. Unless it's a pass to Powell, all the throws are downfield, or outside the numbers. It would be nice to have a security blanket, something I hope the team takes care of next summer.
I don't think people are upset we aren't using what we have, but what we have period. Amaro could've been a decent catch passer but he's hurt. Beyond him we have a blocker and a Cumberland.
Its a good thing Gailey's offense doesnt use the TE much. But having a solid TE threat would've made this offense better even if he wasnt targeted much.
Clearly you misunderstand what the TE problem is. The problem isn't that we aren't throwing to our TE's. The problem is our TE's suck.
Not related to this thread, but damn I am missing Jets football this week. Seems like forever since we played in London. With that said, I think Brandon Marshall is fulfilling that jump ball type of receiver that many good tight ends do anyway. But the more I think about it, with Amaro coming back next year, I think the most we are gonna do about it is bring in a veteran to compete. I am thinking like how Kellen Winslow was supposed to be for us, but hopefully better. If there is a can't miss TE in the draft falling to us, I am sure we will pick him, but otherwise I dont see us doing a lot at the position next year either.
The problem is that opposing D's will counter by not concerning themselves with coverage options for the Jets TE's. That will allow them to make it harder for the Jets WR's to get open. It's unfortunate that Amaro went down and left the Jets without a pass catching TE threat, but the Jets OC should find a way to target Cumberland or Davis at some point during a game, if for no other reason than giving the opposing D something else to think about. Secondly, I don't see how moving Enunwa to TE would solve anything. He doesn't catch anything as a WR, so how that will make the TE position more credible is beyond me.
This pretty much sums it up. When teams see our tightends on the field they are not a factor in the passing game so you can add a guy to the box. At least Kellen Davis can block. If we didn't have at least one blocker at tight end then we might as well not even use one.
If Amaro was healthy and developing putting him out here takes a man off Marshall so I'm pretty unhappy with it. In order to use a TE as a decoy they have to be good. You're not wrong in your assessment of the position but it definitely bothers me.
Gailey is using Marshall and Decker as TEs a lot; he places both in the slot for these [inside the hashmark] pass plays. All of Decker's TD passes all came while he was lining up in the slot for instance. All 3 were inside routes. I don't think Jets must have TE to threaten these soft middle part of the field; they have attacked that area effectively thus far, with pretty good results.
Very well - since when did the Jets have a legitimate threat at TE anyway? The only decent one in my recent memory is Dustin Keller, who wasn't all that impressive anyway. Before that - Jets literally had nobodies at TE like Chris Baker and Jermaine Wiggins. Yeah. That includes the Testaverde days. Or do you want to go back deeper? Like Johnny Mitchell? ===================================== Jesus. Shoot me. Jets just can't draft a TE worth a fuck.
For the present, who gives a shit about a tight end? I want this new regime to start thinking about a QB first. Not exactly like we have had a rich history in this department either.
I an more concerned with Devin Smith developing into a constant deep threat right now than our crappy TE's. That's hoping that Wes Saxton just needs more coaching since he has the physical abilities. If we still need another receiving threat this offseason, I hope the Jets have scouted that Cooper Kupp kid from Eastern Washington. He would be worth a third or fourth rounder.
Lol, that's sadly not happening. Trading that for Michael Bennett could be a realistic option, however.
I bet Gailey would use some TE talent more if we had any. Cumberlands gone invisible in the passing game and maybe never had a role in it to begin with. is Davis a good blocker? I wouldn't even know. we CAN get by on what we have but an emerging Amaro or something would be nice too, make no mistake. this a low priority matter, but something that should be resolved.
Tight end is a very thin position around the league. There are maybe five good ones, and we don't have one, so luckily Gailey doesn't really depend on the position. Though it obviously would have been nice to have Amaro.
There's more to being a TE than being a Jimmy Graham type player. Sadly I would love an "Anthony Becht" on this team right now
