At this point everyone believes one or both of the following assumptions: 1. The Jets will use pick three to take their guy because there are three guys they love at the top of their board 2. The selection will be a quarterback This thread is for ideas involving one or both of the above assumptions to be false. In other words Mac is could be after a non-QB (Barklay, Chubb, Fitzpatrick, etc), plan to trade back down and somehow come out ahead, or is otherwise trying to manipulate other teams who think the Jets are going all in for a QB. Please share your ideas about how Mac could be playing 3D chess instead of doing the obvious.
Darnold and Rosen go #1 and #2. Bills really want Allen and trade up with us for a kings ransom to get him. We take Jackson at #12.
How about this? Jets don't want a QB and this is a bluff. Bills and Bronos take the bait. Both teams move up into the top two taking Darnold and Rosen off the board. Cleveland swaps picks with us to take Barkley. Dolphins give us the farm to take Mayfield Giants take Nelson We move back to our original spot to take Chubb at # 6 while netting a couple extra picks.
Mike Florio at PFT seems to think we take Barkley or Chubb Reason being the regime doesn’t have time for a franchise QB to develop and need results now
The idea of flipping the #3 on draft day for an even bigger ransom than we gave up sounds cool on paper, but Macc knows that his job is on the line if they can't get the QB situation fixed. Whoever they pick, they will have 2 great character guys to help him along at the position. It makes too much sense, therefor the Jets probably won't do it. Get ready for the trade down.
If we trade down with the right team and get their first rounder next year (and that team tanks) we end up with a franchise LT, QB, etc.next year in addition to getting a top 15 player in this year's draft.
That's ridiculous! If Macc was under pressure to win now, he wouldn't have gutted the roster last season and would have brought in a more competent QB than McCown. No one can expect the Jets, no matter who they draft at #3 to turn this ship completely around in one season. I think it's more than evident that ownership has given Macc a long leash to rebuild the Jets according to his plan. The measuring stick for Macc (and Bowles), at least in the near future, is not wins, but consistent improvement.
We draft Bradley Chubb with the third pick even though Sam Darnold is still on the board. Then the Browns pass on Darnold because they think there's something wrong with him. So we trade our 2020, 2021, and 2022 second rounders to the Broncos for the 5th pick, and finally we trade the 5th pick to the Colts for Andrew Luck and punt returner David Putney.
Why is everyone looking to not take the franchise QB at 3? We clearly traded up to get a QB, which we desperately need. It will be one of Darnold, Rosen, or Mayfield. No matter what.
1.Darnold 2.Rosen 3. Barkley I suppose it’s possible that he has this as his board and it’s not close. However this is not reality as this move was made to get a QB and only a QB. I love Barkley, will root for him to have a great career, even if he ends up with the NYGs. Another year I might even have been pounding the table to get him at any cost but not this year. This year the Jets has to bring in the future at the QB position and that’s just what Mac has done. Now I sure hope he gets the right one.
The QB or bust guys need to look at the QBs objectively. Barkley, Chubb, and Nelson would all be respectable picks at # 6. Perhaps there are only two QBs the front office takes seriously. Even if they like two QBs they could like one a lot more than the other. If that is the case the draft board could look like this: 1. Sequon Barkley 2. Sam Darnold 3. Josh Rosen OR Bradley Chubb 4. Josh Rosen OR Bradley Chubb 5. Quenton Nelson If the draft board for the Jets falls this way there could be a huge gap between these five guys and the next player assuming that the Jets have discarded the other QBs for whatever reasons. Even with Bowles as coach it would be hard to justify a DB after last year's draft and this year's free agent signings. Another possibility is that they have fallen in love with a player like Calvin Ridley or someone else we have not considered.
Mike Florio is brain dead then, you don;t give up 3 picks for an edge rusher or rb of which one would have probably been there at 6 anyway..totally brain dead.
And will be at the end of the year if he doesn't take one...the media will have a field day and the planes will be flying over the meadowlands.
