The Jets have been the #1 defense in the AFC East for 3 years now. They keep using 1st round picks on players to maintain that and if they can find a FS somehow, even just Jim Leonhard again, I expect they'll be on top next year also. The offense is where the Jets are foundering.
Ditto...100% agreed right here. The O needs help. The D will be just fine. People are really flipping out a tad too much about the D.
If Dowling plays like he's expected to, NE could move McCourty to FS where he looked very good at times late last season, he played a lot better with the ball in front of him, that could potentially upgrade both positions in the secondary. Jones/Hightower are both known for their pass rushing abilities as well, a good pass rush can mask issues in the secondary, the same way a good secondary can mask issues with your front 7. I don't see NE's defense making any sort of Texans type 32nd to 2nd type upgrade, but maybe to the late teens-early 20's. Hard to get worse than they were last season. I also wouldn't rule out NE taking Janoris Jenkins and having Jenkins/Dowling as outside starters, Arrington in the slot, with Chung/McCourty at safety, lots of potential, but also a very unproven setup. If the Jets can address their pass rush, or already have, then I see no reason to see them slipping from #1 in the AFCE, Miami will probably be #2, they have a good foundation, and NE/Buffalo will duke it out for 3/4, but will also probably carry the #1 and 2 offenses in the division.
I would say the Pats picked two guys with bigger bust potential than the Jets, and they focused on guys who jumped up the boards in the last month. Hope they play like shit.
we still have the best D in the division and we got a lot better last night, still work to do but w/ rex calling the D again, Mo in year 2, Coples, Ellis in year 2, BT back I think we'll see a D much closer to 2009 than 2011.
We had a down year defensively last year and we still finished 5th overall. Buffalo n new England will be improved but they till have a way to go before they catch up.
That won't be much of a necessity if Jets can land a pass rushing OLB today - especially, with the growth of Maybin. QB on his back = best pass defense out there.
New England had the best draft and improved their D tremendously, but their secondary is still awful. I think their upgrades most directly effects us when we play them. That ground and pound shit is about to get really hard to do. We better get better at going down the field quick.
Why? I've read this about three times today. IMHO they've got a solid pick and a risky pick. I can't wait for Rounds 4-7 so I don't have to hear more about the genius of fucking Belichick. No doubt they'll take another two amazing "steals" tonight.
NE ALWAYS has the best draft, no matter whatt hey do they are always praised even though most of their drafts in the last 6-7-8 years haven't been very good.
We have the best player and arguably the best secondary (not crazy about our safeties). I think Buffalo has the best pass-rushing front 7, and NE has the best run stopping front 7. Cautiously optimistic for the Jets this season, but I have a sicking feeling our defense will be middle of the pack. Everyone assumes this is still going to be the dominant D from two years ago... why?
I think we'll be better for a few reasons and I expect this D to be somewhere btw the '09 and '10 versions. rex is calling the D again, Pettine did a year ago Wilkerson is in his 2nd year, we added Coples and brought back pouha. Our DL will be really good and we have depth w/ Ellis, Ripoti and Devito We get BT back Kyle Wilson has another year under his belt we upgraded at S but we do still need some help. I'd love another S(whether it's bringing back leonhard or drafting someone) and an OLB in the draft but I think we are going to have a MUCH better D than we saw last year.
Guys already on the defense are expected to get better next season? Good thing that isn't happening to the young players on the Jets, Bills and Pats...
