Fellas, I spoke to one of my customers at work today who happens to be a Steelers Fan, and he said he wants to go to the Jets game this year. This guy has gone to several road games-- as far as San Diego to see the Steelers Play. He said that he has had women try to fight his wife, grown men giving shit to his 10 year old kid, and numerous beers thrown at his familly at about every stadium but Tennessee. To me, this is such BS. If a fan from an opposing team comes to your stadium, you really shouldn't give the person any shit. Maybe a little heckling if you feel like being a big shot, but really, the whole thing is unnecessary. I'm a 27 year old guy, and I've had my fare share of offensive actions towards others, but I'm opposed to messing with a fan loyal enough to follow his team to another city. That ticket he bought could have just as easilly been picked up by a loyal ran of the home team-- but it wasn't. Maybe the fans need to be more conscerned with filling the stadium with their own, than of picking on the guy loyal enough to travel with his team. As different as the interests are of a Jets fan from say a Pats fan, we are all football fans, and most likely loyal ones if we are at a game. I think NY/NJ is so diverse that we are all used to people routing for other teams, so we really have no excuse. The jerk off from some BS town outside of Clevland who's familly has lived there for 120 years has an excuse to have that small town mentality-- we don't. Lets act with some class to visitors-- especially if it's a guy with his familly. Chances are, we'll all be at a road game sometime and will not want to look over our shoulders for flying beers. I've been at road games and I have had tons of shit happen to me. I was pissed outta my mind. But I also knew that I risked that kind of stuff happening to me if I went to this road game. So if you're gonna go to a road game, suck it up.
It's been my experience (22 years) that opposing fans don't get hassled that much nowadays. This wasn't always true, because in the late 80's and early 90's, Jets fans were still extremely hostile to opposing fans. But that has moderated to a large degree lately, so tell your friend he'll be okay at a Jets game. Now, if he wants to conduct himself like an @sshole, all bets are off. Swaggering, drunk, beligerant, obnoxious, aggressive Dolphins fans at Jets games, for example, sometimes wish they had never been born.
I have seen a bunch of Jets games from Steelers bars, including games the two teams were playing. I have never seen a Steelers fan get out of line except for the usual fairly good natured ribbing that goes back and forth between fans. I went to one Browns bar in 2004 when I was in Columbus the weekend of the Jets-Browns game and I felt lucky to get out of there with my skin. My feeling has always been that the more confident fans are in their team the less they need to get in your face when you are rooting against them. So as a Jets fan if you want respect and want to prove to people that you're confident in your team stay out of opposing fan's faces. Steelers fans are cool and Browns fans are not, because Steelers fans know they have a good team and Browns fans know they do not.
For what it's worth I was friends with the guy who hung the "visiting fan" over the wall by his ankles in the upper deck of Shea back in the early 80s.
That's pretty funny, because that's where he got it the worst was in Cleveland. Grown men throwing things at a woman, and a 10 year old kid.
I have gone on numerous road trips for the Jets. Everytime I have wrn my Jets jersey and other apparrell. The worst treatment I have received was in Buffalo. These fans have no class and have no idea about the game of football. Indianapolis was a close second, bunch of spoiled brats. All in all everywhere I have gone I have been heckled. People in other stadiums give me crap, I surely give them crap when I see them in ours.
thats just how it works in the NFL. Your fans give us crap when we go there and we'll treat you the same way when you come into our building.
Here's how I feel. If you openly support your team, expect some ribbing, but nothing serious unless someone is really drunk and takes offense to your support of the opposition. However. if you taunt opposing fans, you deserve everything you get.
That's such a small town way of thinking though. It's another NFL fan- he has his team, you have yours- you're both NFL fans, and chances are, if he's at an away game, he is probably a better fan that you anyway. If you don't want opposing fans there, then more home fans should be buying the tickets, and fewer should be selling on ebay and craigslist.
I don't even remember now and I became friends with him after the fact but it was whispered about for years. It was caught on film by TV that day too. Really pretty famous.
in 2003 i saw a 14 year old girl get asshole chanted at her in the RF bleachers at yankee stadium for wearing a damon jersey (then on the red sox)...and i blamed her father for it, not the fans. knowing where you are, and what youre doing has a big part in what happens. im sure he or his wife arent completely innocent in all of this....i mean, do you see a pattern? they catch shit wherever they go..... somebody chucking a beer at a kid needs his ass kicked though....unless hes wearing a red sox uni in the RF bleachers....then that kids father should catch the beating. hmy: :rofl2:
Dude- this is like the nicest guy ever- he brings his familly to the games, and travels across the country- I'm pretty sure he's not picking fights with people! As for the 14 year old girl with the Damon Jersey on-- it's not her dads fault! This girl probably got the shirt for Christmas, and couldn't wait to wear the stupid thing. If she was substituted with a he, who happened to be 6-10, 300 lbs, nobody would say a fucking word. Anyway, you can wear whatever you want-- this is America right? NY (the melting pot) of all places should realize that. Remember back to Sept. 11th- when other fans, and other teams supported NYC and NY teams?
People made exceptions because of a tragedy. Wounds heal, and those people are not still pulling for NY. I'm with Kowie on this one...if there catching shit beyond the norm wherever they go, there doing something wrong.
Dude- I don't give half a shit about the fan in question- but I think I would have a better idea than you about his game conduct, considering I speak to him every week. I've seen it happen myself- some jerkoff giving a fan shit because he routes for the other team. Anyway, he has had nice experiences also- The Titans and Packers games were fine- most of the bad ones were division rivals. Anyway, it's obvious that those in agreement are normal, decent people. Those who suggest that a 14 year old girl getting cursed at is not just ok, but actually her own fault, are not rational.

First off, I didn't see anyone in this thread condoning throwing a beer at a child. Second, peoples conduct sometimes changes inside an NFL stadium. I've been to games with mild mannered people that unleash the beast once there inside and the game gets going. There's no way possible that your friend is one of those people though, right? Third, so what if you've seen someone giving someone else shit that roots for another team. What the hell do you think the players are doing on the field, exchanging compliments and phone numbers? It's a competitive sport, not a tea party. I sure hope your friend never takes his family to a soccer game.
