    Pick 1
    Golden Tate

Last year the Jets tried to trade back into the first round of the draft to acquire Percy Harvin (a slot receiver) but were unable to do so. Since then the Jets have acquired Braylon Edwards to be their split-end and lost slot receiver Chansi Stuckey in the process. Since the Jets do not have any proven receivers after wideouts Braylon Edwards and Jerricho Cotchery and struggled to create points and convert 3rd downs last season, it makes sense to draft Golden Tate, a slot receiver, here to solidify the passing game.

On offense we do not have many needs. One of those few needs, however, is a slot receiver. Right now our only options are Brad Smith and David Clowney. Both of which were on the roster when we attempted to trade up for Percy Harvin in the draft. Brad Smith is more of an athlete than a receiver and Clowney is best used as a situational deep threat. We need to supply Sanchez with as many weapons as possible to help him avoid the proverbial sophomore slump.

We are set on the outside with Braylon and Cotch, and Keller is a nice outlet for Sanchez but we have little after that. Tate is the threat we need going over the middle to make this offense dangerous and multi-dimensional. If we are going offense in the draft this year I think it is going to be in the first round. Everyone knows Woody Johnson wants to sell PSLs and knows that most people want to see big offensive play when they go to a pro football game. A name like Golden Tate could probably sell a lot of jerseys, too.

I’ve heard that some people would rather have Arrelious Benn with this pick but I think Tate is the safer pick. People that have seen Golden Tate play know that he is competitive and a good leader on and off the field. Notre Dame lined him up all over the field (wildcat, slot, split-end) in a pro style offense under Charlie Weiss. He was actually drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks. Golden Tate is also great at getting yards and making people miss after the catch and is deceptively hard to tackle. There have been questions about Tate’s speed but at the combine he ran an official 4.42 (to go along with an unofficial 4.36). There’s no arguing with Tate’s college production:

    Code:
YEAR REC YDS AVG LNG TD ATT YDS AVG LNG TD FUM LST
    2007 6 131 21.8 43 1 1 4 4.0 4 0 0 0
    2008 58 1080 18.6 69 10 5 37 7.4 24 1 0 0
    2009 93 1496 16.1 78 15 25 186 7.4 33 2 0 0
If any of you enjoy watching Braylon Edwards regularly drop the ball, you are going to love Arrelious Benn because he does practically the same thing. Thankfully, Golden Tate has great eye-hand coordination and does a good job of catching the ball at its apex. Golden Tate can also return punts. Benn is a rawer pro prospect coming out of Illinois and does not fit our offense as well as Tate does. I am not calling Arrelious Benn a bad pro prospect but I would still prefer Golden Tate in the slot with Edwards and Cotchery on the outside.

The main reason I think we should draft Golden Tate if available in the first round is because he is a competitor and a leader at a position of need on and off the field. With the recent acquisition of some players that have created some controversy for their teams, Tate seems like a good guy to have in the locker room and seems like a tough-as-nails Rex Ryan type of guy. Here’s a video of Golden Tate:

I like Golden Tate, but I feel like the team will go in a different direction on draft day.

As long as Rex Ryan is here, we're going to run the football. I don't see the point in invested so much money into a slot receiver, especially if we're not going to pass much.

Like I said though, I like Golden Tate and I wouldn't be upset if the Jets drafted him. I just don't think they will.

Got to throw the ball to open up the run. I might post my 2nd round pick or an alternate pick tomorrow.

I agree...but that's why we gave up players and picks for Braylon Edwards.

We could have given up Stuckey, Trusnik and a 3rd and a 5th for a linebacker. Then we would have had a need for two wide receivers. My point is that a need is a need regardless of whether or not we had already spent on the position. Let's pray Smith and Clowney never have to step into a starting role.

i don't think Electric is criticizing the pick, dude.....conventional wisdom says that we'll probably go in another direction.

If Tate happens to be the guy....I wouldn't complain.

...but we traded those two picks, Stuckey, and Trusnik for a receiver.

Slot receiver isn't that big of a need though, especially in a run heavy offense.

I wouldn't be upset if Golden Tate were selected, but I just feel like this team will go in a different direction.

Yeagh, I don't blame you. If I felt like Odrick would definitely be available at 29 he would be the pick.

I wouldn't be opposed to Golden Tate. He always impressed me when I saw Notre Dame play. He reminded me of Hines Ward..

It's definitely possible that he is the pick, but I wouldn't bet on it. Braylon and Cotchery are starters, but you can't forget that Braylon's contract expires after this season and there really isn't a reliable slot option.

But I think defense is the best bet. Whether it's a pass-rushing OLB or a defensive lineman or even a DB, that's my top choice.

I hope WR is addressed by the 4th round though.. And it's certainly no lock that Golden Tate will be around for #29 anyway.

I think there will be a lot of very quality slot-type WRs when the 4th round comes along.

Does anyone know a better way to list the stats for a player?
