Hawks interested in Jets' Abraham? By Jos? Miguel Romero / Seattle Times staff reporter A report in the Denver Post Tuesday linked the Seahawks to John Abraham, saying the Seahawks are one of the teams interested in acquiring the New York Jets' three-time Pro Bowl defensive end.The Denver Broncos seem to be the front-runner to get Abraham over the Seahawks and Oakland Raiders, among other supposedly interested teams. Abraham is a sack machine who was designated the Jets' franchise player for the second straight year. He seeks to be traded, in part because the Jets never negotiated a long-term contract for the 27-year-old after last season. Abraham's agent did not return phone calls Thursday, but he has said he doesn't expect Abraham to sign the $8.33 million tender to remain in New York. A trade would be costly, as the team that gets Abraham would have to have a long-term deal worked out for him, and he presumably would cost a high draft pick. Seattle, which owns the 31st pick in the draft this year, has the means to obtain and sign Abraham. With the salary cap for each team set at $102 million for 2006, the Seahawks are about $16 million under now that adjustments in NFL minimum salaries have been made. > http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/seahawks/2002855478_hawk10.html
While that may be true, I would just like to point out that the 22nd and 29th picks aren't THAT much better than 31st. And right now Denver is the only other team that has been rumored to be willing to cough up a first rounder...So if that deal falls out...31st is the only other option. If he were to go to Seattle (which I don't see happening in the end) It means that we couldn't strike a deal with anyone else in the first round so we would probably be stuck just taking the 31st pick. In the end I still think Denver will cough up either 22 or 29.
Seattle is definitely the dark horse with a chance to win this race. Denver didn't have much cap room, and has made some pretty big signings.... they may not have the money. Atlanta stays in the mix, but we might have to throw them a third round pick to get their first for Abraham. This FO clearly HATES the idea of losing a pick like that. Seattle could use a PR boost, after screwing up and losing Hutchinson.... they should have franchised him, and now have egg on their face. Getting Abraham fills both a need and would make the fans happy. They definitely have the cap space for him, especially now. The bottom line is that Abraham will try to dictate where he goes, and he does have some leverage. Seattle may well come in as the highest bidder, and that is the most important thing to Abraham.... it's all about the money, IMHO. The fact that they are coming off a Super Bowl appearance, and have a very good chance to repeat as NFC champs, makes it more attractive. I would not be at all surprised if Seattle is where he lands. The big FA money is drying up quickly.
I'm okay with this trade. Like PennyandtheJets stated, 31st is not that much lower than what was being offered. There does not seem to be as much intertest in Abe as I thought there would be. The only other scenario I can see playing out is using Abe as part of a trade package that would help the Jets move up in the draft.
It might be true, but how can you create a market for Abraham? If the Seattle winds up being the only team willing to give a first rounder what are you going to do?
Are you reffering to a trade with Seattle? If so I doubt we could get a First and a second...even if the second is a future pick.
The D-Line of the Seahwaks was very productive last year, so I don't think they need Abe, or at least that they are not willing to give away a 1st round pick. BTW I wonder if now every other team in the NFL was dicussed as a possible trade partner
Well, I would try and get them to sweeten the pot a little. Maybe throw in their second rounder next year or something like that.
Not yet. So far I think we have talked about the Lions, Saints, Seahawks, Redskins, and Denver. I think that is it for now.
I don't know that this Seahawks team is going to be so great for very long, maybe a first round pick next year would be the ticket.
Tatum Bell is clearly on the upswing of his career as a running back. I think he is still locked up for a couple more years. If we get another running back at all, I would like to see us do it throught the draft.
Funny enough, Denver supposedly been trying to trade him for some time now. Theyre looking for a pass rusher; we need a RB....maybe Bell and the 1st is a bit much, but I dont think its unfeasible if we throw in a pick, or ask for less. If they really are trying to trade him, like its been rumored, than it would be a good trade for both sides IMO
Pay him, and Keep him. The 31st player overall, is not worth more than Abraham. I am beginning to wonder if he will remain a Jet, because obviously no one is throwing the Huge money at him, that he thinks he is entitled to. Bottom Line, If he plays this season, in green, he has pocketed 16 mil, in Cash. Any prospective suitor has to pony up more than 8 Mil, plus draft picks...Fairly pricey for a guy with an injury history, I mean after all the top tier is the Kearse contract which was 66/8/16mil to sign. Abraham isnt getting that, and he has 8 mil sitting on the table with 8 already in his pocket...
If we offered Abe and a 3rd, they would probably be cool with a trade involving #29 and Tatum Bell... If Tatum Bell is infact available I would love to get him, but I doubt they trade him after losing Mike Anderson.
