~ ~ ~ hopefully the lions will make the trade for ABE . . . Lions granted a preposterous $11.75 million salary-cap credit Adam Schefter 2/24/2006 INDIANAPOLIS (Feb. 24, 2006) -- -- At a time when most teams are struggling to get under the NFL's salary cap, the Detroit Lions have just hit The Powerball. This week, maybe the most optimum week, the Lions were granted a preposterous $11.75 million salary-cap credit due to a playtime incentive that defensive tackle Shaun Rogers failed to reach last season. "Cap magic," one Lions official said, confirming the team's windfall. Besides a possible QB, the Lions could find Shaun Rogers some linemates. In 2004, the Lions tied Rogers' playtime bonus to 2005 instead of the more conventional 2006 way just in case of the unlikely event that there was no extension to the collective bargaining agreement. Now there is no extension -- and no extension in sight -- but the Lions are in a position every team wishes it were. They have a windfall of salary-cap space that they didn't anticipate having and now can attack the free-agent market in a way that other teams cannot. While other teams will be slashing and cutting, the Lions will be out spending. And one of the ways they now can use their newfound $11.75 million windfall is on free-agent quarterback Drew Brees, a quarterback that Detroit is expected to pursue. With a newfound $11.75 million, how can they not? > http://www.nfl.com
sign and trade abe for their 1st (9th pick) and anything else they through in ( 4th,5th) trade our 5th for ramsey with our 2 1st rounders take d'brick & DE Mario Williams
Hopefully an Abe deal will get done soon, resolving the CBA was huge. We know there are several intersted teams, and now those teams have the money. As long as we walk away with a 1st pick I think we all will be happy. While I will be sad to see Abe go, at this point I don't think there is a choice. I am looking forward to seeing some new talent on the D-line, with all the talent we have/had on our D-line their numbers should have been much better, they were a solid group but they should have been great.
Not trying to be critical my man, but the actual trade would involve us throwing in more picks...not them. The trade rumor reported by John Clayton was John Abraham, our 3rd round pick and the Lions First rounder... Also we wouldn't be able to get BOTH D'Brick and Mario Williams...there is no doubt we could land one of them, but we wouldn't be able to get Both.
I wouldn't want Mario Williams. I know, he's a stud, but if I wanted a stud DE I'd keep Abraham. I know he's pissy, but show him his $, and that'll change. I'd rather we use 4 and 9 for BPA on offense. I wouldn't touch D in round 1 unless someone falls so far it's just painful not to make the pick. That won't happen with pick #4.. it could with #9.
Now that the CBA has been passed, expect a trade deal to get done with Abe by the end of next week. The Lions' #9 pick looks very good, but I will ask somebody to pinch me if it happens. In some respects, it is sad that Abe's behavior over the course of being on the Jets hasn't been upper echelon. His whining over the last couple of years coupled with some of the things he has been publically quoted on recently are the real reason he is going. His demeanor is not compatible with the new regime. It is not about the money. If the Jets wanted him to stay right now, they could pull it off. The reason Abe is going is about Abe and not the Jets. If Abe only took the Curtis Martin approach to the game, he would be under contract right now, and we wouldn't even be talking about this.
Well I never really said I wanted Mario, but ok...lol I know you dislike Jay Cutler for some reason, but I think he is just what this team needs. A confident, strong armed, TOUGH AS NAILS, scrambling, smart, and is a franchise QB that can make every throw. We would be very wise to grab a guy like that and let him sit for a full year on the bench. I would grab Jay Cutler at #4 if he is available and not think twice. If we somehow landed #9, I agree that both should go for best offensive player...I really think Winston Justice would be smart. He is a big guy and can play EITHER Tackle position. He has was part of one of the best offensive lines in college football and seems like a good fit for our team...(and our huge hole at RT).
I agree, I don't think there is any question he would have had his contract by now if he had just kept his mouth shut. Nice job Abe.
Kelly what day is today? I have Thursday 3/9 on my calander. Your NEWS UPDATE is from Friday 2/24, about two weeks ago. ALOT has changed over that time frame. Don't get me wrong, I apreciate the updates. Just keep them current please. Fitz
I just have a feeling this deal is gonna happen.I also think we will trade down from #9 to about 12 or so and re-acquire a 3rd rounder. Then at 12 we will go BPA.
What makes you think that someone in the top 15 will be interested in losing their third rounder to move down to 9? Trades don't occur too much in RD 1 so I don't see that happening, but I would love to get #9 from detroit and take Winston Justice.
I'd really like this deal to happen and soon. So we could look more closely at the HB position at 9 but we have to take D'Brickshaw
B/c the depth at the top of this draft is golden. Somebody will fall to 9 like Vernon Davis, Mario Williams, Ngota...somebody is going to fall. And when players fall, that's when team's in the 11-15 range overcompensate and make some crazy draft day moves.
We already have three RB's on the roster...do you think we will carry 4? D'Brickashaw would be a smart pick, but I don't think we HAVE to take him...
Actually now that you mention Ngata...if he is there at 9, Cleveland may give their 3rd rounder or more and their Left nut to get this guy. I have heard they really like the guy.
In other years drafts, Mario Williams could be #! overall,,,, he's amazing,, he's 6'7 and runs a 4.6.
I do not like Cutler is a little strong. I don't like him at #4.. Heck, #9 is stretching it for me. I like guys who perform on gameday... in big games. Cutler performs in workouts or when the D is in prevent. Yes, some of it was due to the fact he played for Vandy, but still
