I know many of you out there were excited about the All American Football League, so this news may come as a shock to you. According to published reports, the league is on the verge of folding before it's even held its first practice.

Um, wait, what's the AAFL again?

Ah yes, the AAFL. It was an idea to create a pro league of only 4-year college graduates who couldn't make the NFL because they sucked and have them play at college stadiums across the country. Also, players from certain regions were supposed to only be able to be drafted by specific teams, so that there was some kind of connection to college fan bases. I'm not even going to touch on the insane logic behind that one.

So anyway, it's just like college football, except with crappy players, no fans, and no excitement.

    How could it possibly fail?!

Well, to say the whole idea has been poorly executed would be an understatement. Apparently the league was tied into the sub prime mortgage lending crisis and is now going to be too expensive to operate. But for some reason, no one realized that until just now. How no one knew that renting out college stadiums and the original idea of paying the players an absurd $100,000 a season might cause that problem is beyond me.

The image of the league was also a disaster. Snarktastic wound up sneaking into the draft, and writing about that problem. You can read about that here. My favorite quip, the league had no nicknames or mascots for its 6 initial teams at the Draft. Go Team Arkansas! Yeah, that's called "lazy."

The players who were selected in the initial draft may also be an indication as to why the league should just give up now. Headcase/uber-washout Eric Crouch managed to be the third overall pick. I won't lie, when Eric Crouch is your league's third overall pick, it better be for a flag-football league.

Even more hilarious, Peter Warrick was drafted 40th overall. And Wayne Fontes's brother was going to be a head coach. Awesome.

And last but not least, their PR sucked. I interviewed a guy months ago who was doing PR for the league and he told me all about how he was going to be drafted. Can you guess what happened? He didn't get drafted. Hell, I could have been drafted in this league, if, you know, I had actually finished college.

So anyway, good work AAFL. You couldn't have possibly done a worse job organizing this league. It's a shame you won't be around this spring to entertain about 300 people.
