I was thinking...the Jets didn't want to pay Adam's the money he wanted, when he was clearly top 3 safety , if not the best in the NFL...at that time. There was even talks of sinkng all that money into the safety position, and how that wasn't gonna happen.
What would happen if we drafted Hamilton at 4 and then got to his 5th year option and have to pay him..
And sink all that money into the safety spot all over again?

I think, we need to focus on improving the front 7. Its a lot like our old jets sack exchange, all built on up front, makes the
    secondary better than it is.
I still say Sauce....is a guy id take before Hamilton here, premiere spot, CB, he's a perfect fit, and once up front is fixed, he could be a pick machine. Plus when the option comes up , you pay him .
I'm not saying to do this, im just looking at managements previous actions, in relation to the current situation.
Sauce isn't a #4 pick.....but his value is so much higher in this defense especially.
    Just saying.. just my opinion

Adams is long gone and irrelevant to filling a position of need for the Jets. It sounds like you're suggesting Safety is a position where no one should ever be retained beyond their rookie contract, regardless of how well they are performing. What other positions do you view the same way?

The answer is if Hamilton is taken and performing at the top of the position you find the money to keep him because he is worth it. Just like Stafford's next contract will probably get him close to forty million a year, you pay him because he is worth it. And part of finding the money to pay the top performers is not to be paying for the redundancy of "insurance" guys for positions that are adequately covered.

No , its actually NOT what I said since you clearly DIDNT read ,just reacted, to what you glanced at. THE JETS didn't want to pay top dollar at the safety spot.
Yea, and let's not keep ANYONE beyond their rookie contract....another thing I clearly stated too right??....of course..

I think this could have gone in the 'Who would you take at #4' thread.

Having said that, the Jets clearly didn't think Adams was good enough to sink big money into. I don't think it had much if anything to do with the fact he was a safety. It was more that he seemed to impact the game more as a pass-rusher than anything else and that was always likely to be a flash in the pan kind of thing. He wasn't a ballhawk, hardly had any interceptions, didn't break up many passes... he was a good player and I liked having him on the team, but he was a bit of a curiosity, not someone to build your secondary around in a conventional sense.

Whoever we take at 4, we will be faced with whether or not to give him huge contract a few years down the line. If it is an elite player, I think we'd find a way. If not, we'd find a trade partner. I would prefer to land a really good edge, but we'll have to see how it works out on the day.

You say the bolded statement like it was a common thing. He was a pass rusher on a team that desperately needed one. Add to the fact that he could line up anywhere on the defense which made him hard to account for by offenses. So what if his position was safety? He was doing the work of DE's and LB's and wanted to get paid for it. He broke the record for sacks by a safety as a Jet and reset it again at Seattle recording more sacks in those two years than half the guys whose job it was to get sacks. You're right, he wasn't a ballhawk type, but he was a sure tackler, another skill the Jets safeties were lacking last season. Yes, okay, the Jets got 2 first round picks for him, but there's the old adage about a bird in hand....

Hamilton stands out more at his position than any other group with the possible exception of edge, which is always a crap shoot. I just hope the Maccagnan experience of drafting 2 safeties up top doesn't cloud the Jets from making the right choice if he's available.

Time to double down on NO And NO for drafting a safety that high ..just a waste imo . Sorry

Plenty of talent later in draft

Go get an Edge or OL at 4 that makes sense

Is 40 million really going to a QB these days? Holy inflation Batman lol

This draft IMO should be about JD adding the most talented players available to us in the draft. Kyle Hamilton and Tyler Linderbaum are not only the two most talented players in this draft but they're also considered two generational talents... Future HOF's... For me, you NEVER turn down generational talent unless you already have one at that spot. The Jets have NOTHING. They also have a dire need at many positions. What's even better is Safety and OL are two spots where the cupboard is most bare. They are huge positions of need. Throw in the idea that JD's marching orders are very clear. He's EXPECTED to create a team that's competing for a playoff spot in December/January. When you have that on your back you no longer have the luxury of worrying about timing. In fact,it's just so silly that this needs to be explained. There's just way too many blackheads on this site.

Either way, Joe Douglas should select Hamilton and Linderbaum and know he's just selected two players that are GUARANTEED to contribute on opening day. Their impact will be felt immediately in a large positive way. It will allow JD to cut McGovern thereby clearing 10 million in cap space and getting the Jets financial house even further in order. This is to say nothing about how this will make positions like RB, QB, CB, run defense, better immediately.

I'm also sold on the fact that Boye Mafe in the 2nd round will provide just as much talent at edge rusher as Thibodeaux will. I think it's a waste to draft Thibodeax at 4. Sure, he's a talented player but not enough to be a game changing player. Kyle Hamilton most definitely is a game changing player. So is Linderbaum.

Free agency will ultimately tell us a lot about JD's intentions in the draft. If Joe signs a starting Safety we'll know I'm wrong. However, if I'm in Joe's spot the choice is easy....

No, I say it like it was an uncommon thing. A defensive back whose main value has been rushing the passer is very unlikely to continue with that production. Out of the top 100 pass-rushers last season there were two defensive backs, ranking #68 and #94. DBs do not amass huge pass-rush numbers every year. It is not something you pay a safety huge money for, because he isn't likely to do it again. Like I said, I liked Adams. He turned out to be a huge pain in the ass during contract negotiations, but I liked him as a player.

I agree, Hamilton is a very talented player but the safety position isn’t an impactful position. Especially SS which he plays. I do think Hamilton can play linebacker as well so maybe they take him as a hybrid if they do draft him at 4.

If KT is off the board at 4 I think we need to trade back with someone looking for a QB like Den/Wash. We slide back to either 9 or 11 grab an extra 2nd and a first next year. At 9 or 11 Either Sauce or Stingley will be there

Sorry, I misunderstood the gist of your statement. However, I think Adams could have continued to put up those sack numbers if 1) he hadn't been injured last year and 2) the defensive scheme called for it.

True, he came across as uncooperative during negotiations, however the Jets didn't help by publicly declaring him tradeable. I hated the pick at #6 that year, but he did turn out to be an exceptional player.

The reports at the time were the Jets did want to pay Jamal Adams until his temper tantrum forced their hand. Worked out for the best though as Jets got a crazy haul back for him.

Hamilton and Jamal are obviously completely different players though. I have no problem drafting Hamilton at 4 because I think he will be an elite playmaker, which we all know this D severely lacks.

To me Kyle Hamilton (S) is a player another team may be willing to trade up for. If Hutchinson (edge) is gone, and he almost certainly will, maybe even 1st overall, then JD will be deciding between a lesser edge guy, another 1st round pick on the oline, Kyle Hamilton, or trading down. If Kyle is still there at 4, and he probably will be, then JD will have no problem trading down if that's what he decides to do.

Two things, Adams wasnt one of the best S's in the league.

And the Jets went into the offseason ready to pay Adams what a top S gets. Problem was Adams wanted to be paid what a top defender was being paid. Two vastly different things. He wasnt Aaron Donald or a JJ Watt and when that became a snag he went off, insulting the GM first, the HC and finally the owner. Essentially talking his way out of town.

I think Maryland’s Cross may be more talented than KH. That’s just my opinion because he has speed strength and fluidity. He proved that in combined. He isn’t the size of KH. I don’t know where Cross will fit but he could be a nice pick in 3rd round if he falls that far back.

Cross could be a great add at S. So could Cine, Pitre, Hill, and/or Brisker. This is one of the best safety classes I recall seeing. We don't have to take Hamilton at #4 to get a stud S. He isn't the only playmaker at S, either.

I don't think it's that close between Hamilton and Cross. I think Hamilton's 40 time is tricking a lot of people into thinking he's not a great athlete.

Hamilton had a higher vertical and longer broad jump than Cross and Hamilton also had a really good 3 cone time. He also looked really fluid in the field drills while being 6'4 220.

I wasn't trying to say that it was close between Cross and Hamilton, but he (Cross) was already considered a pretty good prospect, and this just made him a little more intriguing. He could be plenty good paired with another S, an excellent pass rush and sound CB tandem. We don't have to add Hamilton to improve the S spot. I'd rather have Cine, Pitre, Hill or Brisker, but wouldn't hate it, at least initially, if Cross was the S we added in the draft.
