Training Camp: Players To Watch For - TE Jason Pociask July 19th, 2007 by Gary Grund Jason Pociask The New York Jets selected tight end Jason Pociask in the fifth round of the 2006 NFL Draft. Pociask played in 41 games for Wisconsin earning 12 receptions for 144 yards over three seasons for the Badgers. Pociask didn?t possess any eye-popping numbers at Wisconsin as he was not the starter in his senior season. He is more known for his ability to block defenders rather than catch the ball. An added bonus to Pociask is that he has the ability to line up at various positions on the gridiron. He could be used in an H-Back role much like Stacy Tutt or Sean Ryan from last season. Sean Ryan was used as a blocking tight end but would continuously be in motion and end up in the backfield as a fullback on multiple plays. With Ryan back with the team this season and with Chris Baker on the roster, you wonder if the team will be willing to carry Pociask if he doesn?t perform well in training camp and preseason. Pociask was signed by the Jets just prior to training camp last season and missed the first two days of camp with a shoulder injury. Considering that he was a late-round pick and with Eric Mangini and Mike Tannenbaum running the show, late round picks no longer were safe to make the squad as a rookie like when Herman Edwards and Terry Bradway were in charge. Despite being placed on injured reserved with a shoulder in early August of last season, Pociask remained with the team and will look to start fresh this year.
I don't think that he makes it through camp. Ryan held the fort last year, Baker was his typical self, and the CS might be giving a hard look to Tutt in the same H-Back role.
Disagree. He was a STUD blocking TE. The Jets drafted him to groom him as a Lorenzo Neal type of blocking FB. He could be terriffic in that role.
I'm all one for getting the best player in the game- if he represents an upgrade over an incumbent, go for it...
Kentucky Jet, you got to start posting links. Otherwise it looks like your trying to take the work to be your own, which it isn't. http://www.jetscentral.com/?p=372
It's good to see Tangini has coninued to add depth at every position, but no one is better for the job, that's currently on the roster, than Baker. he showed great ability to get open in the flats and bring in the ball in tough situations when it was needed. Not to mention getting the grab he did before being forced out against Cleveland.
I absolutely agree with you. The guy is a great blocker and can catch, if thrown to. I find it amusing that guys want to dismiss some of our players without ever seeing them play!
As previously stated: I find it amusing that guys want to dismiss some of our players without ever seeing them play!
I certinly do agree with you on his blocking ability. I ,at least , want to give him the opportunity to earn a job with us. If he is as great of a blocker as advertised, we will be better off.
Before the draft, one website (I believe it was rotoworld) said this year's TE crop was so weak that if Pociask was in this year's draft he would be among the top 2 or 3 in the draft. I was strongly against us drafting a TE this year and cited that article a couple of times in support of my argument, so I remember it specifically. Since he was hurt all year, I've never seen him play. So I'm not endorsing him or anything, but if he came out this year instead of last and was the 3rd TE taken overall, we probably would be expecting more. If he produces this year, it's like found money.
