Remember guys; it's only February. Both Winston and Mariota could fall. Who knows at this point. This is where experts thought Geno would be picked (in February before the draft):
That perceived draft stocks of players can change so much from now to the end of April is a good point to keep in mind. Things can look very different for many prospects at any positions
Bingo. Which is why I don't understand why so many people(admittedly to a lesser extent lately) have been saying "there's no way we get Mariota", "he'll be long gone by 6", etc. He may very well be gone by the 6th pick, but it's equally as likely that he's there at 6 too. Especially considering it's only mid-February.
QB is one of those positions that can rise or fall because draftniks, like myself, always over value QB's in a draft because of how important the position is. It's also impossible to know how a kid struck a team in the interview process or how a team really feels about the QB they already have on their roster. In Geno's case he wasn't impressive in team interviews and teams passed on him. Once he got out of the top 10 it was very likely he'd go in tot he 2nd round since later teams generally don't need QB's enough to use a first round pick on them, there are exceptions of course. I'll to this day argue that Bridgewater should have been a top 10 pick.
Great thread Axel... Based upon this, and given both top QB prospects have question marks (Winston off field issues, Mariota on field seasoning) isnt it reasonable to expect that both QB's could potentially be there for the Jets at 6? I doubt it given Tampa Bay's cut of McNown, but neither of these guys is a surefire pick. If it turns out guys like Petty and Greyson rate comparable to Mariota I can see him dropping considerably.
Yeah, I slammed my head a couple of times before saying I was okay with the actual pick...not ecstatic though. too much value was there.
I wonder if that pick would have saved Idzik's job. Having Teddy as a backup to Geno, followed by Teddy starting after a few games. We would probably have gone 4-12 if not worse, but the hope that a rookie brings is incalculable.
Good point. I have to say however, that even as much as I love Teddy Bridgewater's potential as a QB and would have loved to have him as the Jets' QB, if it would have meant keeping Ryan and Idzik (and Bradway and all the rest of the dead wood that was jettisoned by Mac) here, then I'm glad Idzik didn't draft him.
I remember earlier in the yearseeing Tajh Boyd in the Top 20 on several mock sites. Things changed before February but just goes to show how uncertain this can be
Nobody knows where people are going to rank in May. It's just such an absurdly long window from the end of the season until the draft. By then Winston's off the field issues may have turned into a glaring red flag and Mariota's on the field performance been dissected into not good enough to play in a pro set. We just don't know where things will wind up. Brady Quinn went from #1 prospect to a guy who could have fallen into the 2nd round if the Browns didn't make a move for him. The guy who got picked #1 that year wasn't interested enough in football to even finish his first contract. It's a crapshoot and trying to call it 3 months ahead of the draft is a fool's errand.
