One of the biggest issues this team has had since Rex Ryan became the head coach is the consistently shameful manner in which we waste timeouts. Rex, his coaching staff, and his players collectively treat timeouts like they are cost-free, pre-snap adjustments. It's absurd.

In what percentage of our games under Rex have we managed to enter the last 2 minutes of the second half with all three timeouts? Have there been ANY???? Seriously, I would love to know.

Up until this point, we have actually been amazingly fortunate that this alarming tendency has cost us so few (if any?) games.

This issue has been a perpetual complaint on this board for years now. It probably has had its own thread before, but with yesterday serving as yet another troubling example of this nonsense, I have decided to create another one.

But Rex is a defensive genius so much so that our D barely gets any turnovers and when they do they give it back on dumb penalties

    Second half timeouts:

    1) Waste one because they have confusion with the sideline after the Decker catch on the sideline on the second play of the half.
    2) Waste one because of confusion issues on the sideline (substitution issues) on defense with 9 minutes remaining
    3) Waste one because of confusion issues on the sideline negating a TD (well documented)

    Great job coaching staff.

The messed up thing is that the unfortunate timeout that is getting all the publicity would've been a non-story if they didn't blow those other timeouts. They would've kicked the field goal there with 5:30 remaining. 31-27 score with 5:30 minutes remaining and three timeouts. One defensive stop and you can get the ball with time remaining and go for the win at the end. Instead they screwed themselves into having to go for it and not being able to stop the clock after they blew that.

This is the one thing about Rex that drives me absolutely nuts. Someone needs to slap him in the face and simply tell him he's not allowed to use a timeout until there's 4 minutes left in the game. Under any circumstance. Ever. Maybe then we'll save 3 once or twice a year.

The sad thing is that this isn't just a Rex thing this is a constant Jets problem. We've had clock management problems since Parcells left and it boggles my mind. Everyone watching the games can see it why can't anyone in the organization figure it out and correct it.

Yup, this has been a constant problem for over a decade it seems. Herm was awful with TOs.

Oh where is Dick Curl when you need him.

I have the NFL package; this is bigger than Rex. It's a problem that plagues the entire NFL. Look how McCarthy stupidly wasted a TO with that challenge.

Yeah I think you're right--I see it all the time and it looks so stupid some of these TOs getting called.

But as Jet fans we tend to concentrate more on our own stupidity.

Rex is better suited to be a DC on a stacked defense he inherited. HC is too much thinking, and if truth be told he had already given Marty card blanch on doing anything he felt necessary with the offense including timeouts.

Marty had only run the ball more than 2013 once in his career and that was his first year as coordinator where you can bet he didn't have carte blanche.

Maybe Rex needs to pull a Herm and hire a clock management assistant coach. ;) But yeah, he's a great HC. LMAO He can't even handle the basic, fundamental aspects of his job.

Rex is pretty bad at this, but he's not the only one. Time management in the NFL and in College Football in recent years has been horrible. It doesn't make any sense though. It's the one "coaching" aspect of football that every average fan understands.

    - 1st half it's fine to waste timeouts to get things right on THAT drive.
    - 2nd half all 3 should be saved for the end if possible.
    - No more then 1 timeout should EVER be used in the early part of the 2nd half.
    - Don't Ice the Kicker (It doesn't work, Kickers actually hit more often after they get "iced")
    - Timeouts should NEVER be used on Punts, 3rd and 18, and Kickoffs. Yes I have seen all 3 of these happen in various games recently.

I had a terrible fear that I would be bumping this after a heartbreaking loss.

Rex still doesn't have a clue how important timeouts are. And tonight, it cost us dearly. I'm not saying it's the reason we lost, but the last 2 minutes would have been played drastically differently if we even had ONE extra timeout.
