This was a fun exercise in seeing what position types teams have valued in the first round of the draft over the last 10 years. I included the 2010 draft through the 2019 draft, only first round picks. IOL includes guard and center. DT includes 4-3 DT, 3-4 DE, and NT. Edge includes 4-3 DE and 3-4 OLB. ILB includes 3-4 ILB and all 4-3 LB. First, good job putting in the effort on this. Very interesting and informative. Second, how SOJ is it to focus on defense so heavily while the NFL was clearly becoming an offense-oriented league! In all seriousness, if they used every pick in the draft on offense it wouldn't upset me (assuming they're actually good picks and not "Macc picks").
Thanks, one of the things that strikes me is that number of first round selections seems to have little correlation to success, so take that for what you will. If I ever have time I’ll do a deeper dive with 2nd and third rounders.
One of the biggest indictments on the Jets drafting over the last decade is that the last 1st round pick to get a second contract with the team was Mo Wilk and we saw what happened after that. I remember Wischusen had a rant that was posted here a few months ago in which he pointed out that having 100 million in cap space means that there are no players worth paying beyond their rookie contracts.
this made me wonder how and who the teams drafted while Joe D was involved: RAVENS (exact title unknown other than Scouting): 2010 - No 1st rounder 2011 - Jimmy Smith, CB 2012 - No 1st rounder 2013 - Matt Elam, S 2014 - CJ Mosely, ILB BEARS (Dir of College Scouting): 2015 - Kevin White, WR EAGLES (Vice President of Player Personnel): 2016 - Carson Wentz, QB 2017 - Derek Barnett, DE 2018 - No 1st rounder (traded to Ravens for Lamar Jackson) 2019 - Andre Dillard, OT I can't say I'm overly excited about the players those teams drafted. There are a few good ones and some undetermined.
What I saw is we drafted very similar to NE, substitute x2 DT for x2 OT and safety for RB and on paper, we have the same thing. In reality, look at them and look at us. What that says to me, we more or less had the right idea. The 4DT has been a meme around here for a while and well the safety was Jamal Adams, so you can’t say that was a bad move. The problem was the execution, ie personnel choices. Who do we blame for that? Poor scouting? The past GMs?
I totally disagree. We didn't have the right idea. Mac had no clue what he was doing. Those 2 extra DTs instead of OTs, and extra safety instead of a RB were significant. They lefts us with shit OTs and no RB, so we had to sign Bell to a big deal in FA. Of course, we could have drafted a RB in the 2nd or 3rd round, but didn't do that, either. With those DTs, we got 7 years out of Wilkerson, 4 out of Coples, 4 out of Richardson, 5 out of Leon Williams, and 1 so far out of Q. Williams. So that's actually 5 DTs we've drafted in the 1st round and then we also drafted Kenrick Ellis in the 3rd round in 2011 (4 years), Nathan Sheperd in 2018 (2 years), and Folorunso Fatukasi in 2018 (2 years). So that's 8 DTs in 10 years and have ignored the OL, ignored RB, and pretty much ignored drafting a WR high (except Devin Smith). Mac had no clue how to build a roster, and couldn't evaluate players for spit.
Well don’t forget this is 3 Tannenbaum drafts, 2 Idzik drafts, and 5 Maccagnan drafts. He’s only 50% responsible for the last 10 years.
