The Jets are too conservative on first down, too open on second down, and Sanchez isn't very good yet.
Thanks for the analysis I have been saying this for awhile to those who say we are run, run, pass. We are not, we are run, Pass, Pass alot more often or should I say run, Incomplete, pass short of first down. We do not run enough on second down expecially in the 2 and 4 to 2 and 7 range. (Running only 31% of the time in 2 and 6 or more is way too low - especially given our QB) Alot worse can happen than 3 runs and a punt, for a run first team we still have not committed to running the ball. We are just committed to running in first down.
Also: jets run less than every other team except for the colts on 2nd down (even on 2nd and short). Ultimately: schotty can't string a 15 yard drive together. He runs the ball because Rex wants him to and calls pass plays that are nonsensical given the situation/yardage
Im curious to see Bradys stats in those situations. He has to be one of the best 3rd down QBs in the game.
Yep, the offense is a fucstercluck (@ work), hodgepodge. It is like on one hand they want to be conservative and the other they are on a 60 day crack/meth binge.....those 2 methods just do not jive. I think Schotty and Rex really need to sit down and get a freakin cohesive, sensible plan together. It seems whenever they move away from that, and have both ends working against each other, Sanchez blows dead monkeys. When they simplify things, work cohesively this offense is better than ok as is Sanchez. In reality they are giving college level courses to Sanchez when he is in the 4th grade.
Don't the Jets employ stats guys to breakdown certain tendencies? I know MLB teams do this to analyze whats going on. Knowing Schotty, I'm sure all statistical or analytical thought is thrown out the window. If the plays are all pre-scripted, it doesn't matter what situation your in. Would be nice to have someone who could call a game on his feet.
Go back and watch Hard Knocks....the self described 'Damn Good Football coach' tells Sanchez, that "2nd and 3 is a free down"..... Ummm...not quite J/A.
That's called sabermetrics and relates to money ball and it's fairly (I believe ) baseball specific.... As to Schotty, see above.
No. Rex needs to sit down...By Himself and breakdown films of the Eagles, Colts and Pats....then look at what this F*ng @$$hole is putting out there.
Enjoyed the read. Instead of coming to the conclusion that thrid down and short situations should be avoided all together though, why didn't they suggest decreasing the pass plays on those downs? Who wouldn't want to avoid 3rd downs? I may need to go over this again, but essentially got this out of the article: It is ok to pass more on first downs. (although the ratio is not as bad as some think) Short passing plays need better execution. (and be called less)
Seems that passing too much ( and unsuccessfully at that) on 2nd down seriously kills our chance at ground and pound for the majority of the game. 1. doesn't allow us to wear down defenses. 2. puts more pressure on Sanchez 3. often creates 3rd and longs where we really stink! 4. takes away from establishing the run game 5. no run game is established to foster play action passing. So it may seem our game planning for 2nd downs is a blip on the radar but it really blows up our entire offense. Great article!
I'd be interested to know more about the offensive penalties. Seems to me we're often in long down and distance scenarios because of holding, false starts, etc.
