Now that the draft is over, the football season is somewhat done until training camp. I thought it would be interesting if we posted what we expect the 53 man roster to look like heading into the season. Obviously this is subject to change if we make any moves after June 1, or if someone goes down in training camp. OFFENSE-25 Chad Pennington-QB Patrick Ramsey-QB Kellen Clemens-QB B.J. Why would we ever let go of James Dearth? When was the last time we ever had a bad snap? I can't remember one...
All he does is snap. It is clear that Mangini is looking for guys who are versatile, and can do more than one thing. Both Teague and Dreessen can snap, so there is no need for three people at that position. Dreessen is a much better pass receiver than Dearth, and therefore gets the nod.
So? We cut Dreesen if anything. Dearth is the best snapper in the NFL. Most teams have specific longsnappers that they just grant the position title "Tackle" or "Tightend." It's not like Madden where every lineman is an amazing snapper. Not to mention that you're making a 53 man roster without seeing a down from any of our draft picks in camp.
I never said this roster was set in stone, it's just what I think it will be as I sit here in May. Obviously training camp will dictate roster spots, but that doesn't mean we can't forecast what the final roster will look like. As for Dearth, I agree he is a good snapper, but we do not know how good Dreessen is. If he is almost as good, or as good, then Dearth is expendable.
sounds about right Brooks is odd man out if chad is ready for the season OL has been rebuilt --still sorry to see Kevin Mawae go
That roster is a pretty fair projection. Might be a little rookie-heavy - I wouldn't be surprised to see more than one of them on our PS. But I wouldn't quibble with that roster.
agreed, Johnson is barely PS squad material, the new guy Coleman has blazing speed and maybe small but could probably gain 10 or so pounds and become a decent dime back
Ask the 2002 Giants how important it is to have a LS who never messes up. I'm guessing Dearth stays on the team.
Please, for the love of god, take Cavka off that list. The guy couldn't even hack playing in NFLE! He shouldn't be let to travel within 10 miles of the Hofstra facilities.
My guess is neither Darrien Johnson or Drew Coleman makes the team. You already have 10 DB's and 7 LB's, which for a 3-4 is no good. I'm guessing one of those guys go in place of a LB. I'd also imagine either Clement or Cavka will be cut in place of James Dearth.
TE will be an interesting position to watch in camp and Pre-season. Baker can get down field and is a very good blocker. Jolley can get down field and can show he can run after the catch but he CAN NOT block. Dressen showed promise last year. Personally, I like the attitude on the field....admittedly though from a players standpoint it is tough to swallow when it comes from a Rookie. Purely speculatiing on my part but that probably turned some veterans off about him and why it was said to the press last year. Mawae, Fabini and even Herm, an ex player, probably had a tough time with his talking trash. HE ALSO WAS THE LONG SNAPPER AT CSU, SO WE KNOW HE CAN DO IT. Dearth - Arguably the best LS in the league but has not shown any other ability. My gut tells me that if Baker has a good camp and pre-season that Jolley is gone.
I hope Baker picks up where he left off before he got hurt. He was really starting to show some flashes last year. I also hope Dreesen can push Jolley out the damn door.
he played well, nothing special, he's a good blocker, has good hands, smart player. He's never going to be a great tight end but he seems like the type of player Mangini wants. Jolley is much more one dimensional and his hands suck. I think if Dreessen can be a long snapper that there is no reason to keep dearth around.
I would say there's one too many DTs and one too few LBs or DEs on D. Invariably, we will also pick up one or two guys who gets cut by another team after June 1 or during/after training camp, but there's no way you'd know that now. I'd almost be more in favor of getting rid of Jolley, if we can get any value for the guy via trade, than getting rid of Dearth. I seem to remember Dearth making tackles on special teams somewhat regularly, and Jolley doesn't play STs (or at least hasn't distinguished himself).
I think Dearth can be expendable, were a rebuilding team we might as well clear it out all now while were not trying hard to compete. We should get Dressen long snapping this year and get him use to it so we have a solid long snapper for years to come like we have had Dearth. Roster space is just to valuable now especially when we dont have a definite starter at some posistions like QB and RB which is cuasing us to carry on an extra player at each of those positions.
