Tom Pelissero on X: "The #49ers are naming Sam Darnold their No. 2 quarterback and the team is exploring options with Trey Lance, sources tell me and @RapSheet. Darnold will back up Brock Purdy, while the future of Lance — the No. 3 overall pick in 2021 — is unclear. https://t.co/HxXQkfM6nq" / X (twitter.com)
Who knows what they're seeing behind the scenes, but I doubt they'd get much value for him now. I would keep him and see if he can develop more. He was injured for much of his NFL career to this point and was a project even before that.
First, good for Sam. I only watched a little of him in preseason but he looked decent. Second, how fucking awful was that Niners trade?? Before anyone starts screaming "Brock Purdy" you have to remember how damn lucky they got with him. Don't tell me they drafted him to be their 2023 starter. Trading 3 first round picks as well as a 3rd to take Trey Lance is as dumb, if not dumber, than anything a Jets GM has ever done and that includes drafting Vernon Gholston AND Zach Wilson. That organization has a golden horseshoe shoved up their ass. They hit the lottery with Purdy and honestly I hope the fucking floor falls out beneath him. No team should be able to survive such an awful move as the Lance trade.
Trey Lance is worth a look. Someone is gonna get him for peanuts. Really big, athletic and really smart. Hes only 23, he's a good project to take a chance on
He is in the 3rd year of a 4-year deal worth 34.1 million. What teams could make it work cap wise that need a QB. 49ers might have to eat some salary in any potential deal.
North Dakota State is known for producing superstar QB's. His cap hit for this year is 9 million and next year it's almost 11 million. There is the option for a 5th year. His contract is guaranteed. You add all this up and he's worth a conditional 7th. Go get him, JD!!!!
Ian Rapoport on X: "As the #49ers weigh options for Trey Lance, calling his hometown team, the #Vikings (who were a rumored destination before the Draft) makes sense. Nothing is impossible, but MIN has a backup in Nick Mullens and drafted rookie QB in Jaren Hall. Post-draft, these deals are harder." / X (twitter.com)
So we're looking for a team that's willing to play him this year in order to be able to make a call on his option (or basically do-or-die in '24) and also needs to do all the install work on him after pre-season has effectively ended. They also have to figure themselves not in the running for a top 2 position next draft, not have a franchise QB or young gun they want to evaluate already onboard plus have the cap space. In return they get a QB that has basically played one season of D1 Football with next to no NFL tape.
Gotta compare the niner organizations handling of a bust with the NYJ org. SF got a vet backup and cut bait on a perceived loser. NYJ gonna roll with the loser and no vet backup.
You seem desperate to excuse the Zach Wilson pick, which was worth the same 3 first rounders. I’d say ours was worse, as the 49ers never put all their eggs in that basket. Between Garrapollo, Purdy, and now Darnold, they always had depth and options. We traded for Flacco to ensure no depth, competition, or mentoring.
I'm just asking a question. Lance is still on the Niners so I'm not sure what was what in your analogy. And I guess you can call Sam Darnold a veteran backup.
What does Zach Wilson have to do with the Niners trading 3 firsts and a third to move up to #3 to take a guy that played football in the Little League college football division and had a total of 318 total pass attempts while playing there?
Coulda had those 49er draft picks but the Jets were 'wowed' by Wilson's pro day... sad. Imagine how freakin stacked this team would be right now
You tried claiming what they did was somehow worse. I’d say drafting Zach Wilson was worse, especially when considering the overall handling of the position. Zach pick was the equivalent of 3 firsts in value as well, obviously. We could have made that same trade. it’s about the biggest bust move in recent NFL history. The pearl clutching is deliciously hypocritical,
