Just for the record, I know the Vikings are loaded at WR but I could not pass on the value of Demaryius Thomas at #30 He's #17 Overall in my TOP 100 and was the BAP in that spot by a wide margin http://forums.theganggreen.com/showthread.php?t=55900 If that means we have to install a huge 3-Wide Package ala the Colts, Pats, Saints, Cards (etc.), fine by me
I personally think some of you guys might be overrating Joseph a bit. He's officially become this year's Jarron Gilbert. He's a talented guy, would be a great 3-4 end, and I understand why you guys like him, but I don't see him in the first in any other 1st round mocks besides here. Kinda like how Gilbert was seen by some here as a mid-1st round pick, and didn't go into the third round on draft day. I don't personally think Joseph is a first round pick, and I could be totally wrong, but I don't see him going that high.
I haven't drank the Kool-Aid for Joseph at #29. If the Jets draft Joseph at #29...I'll admit to my draft friends I was wrong. I like Joseph, just not in rd 1. I would expect them to give me the same respect if McCourty is the pick.
Id rather of picked up Davis for are RT position. Now that would be an excellent pickup and great value at #29. I think a guy with caliber type play like Joseph could be found in the 2nd like Troup, Cam Thomas, Carrington, or Houston ( even though he would be out of his natural position at 4-3 DT)
Jabba's posted plenty of evidence about Joseph's rising stock. The Chargers will take a long look at Joseph at 28. Gil Brandt has him rated between 30-40...so drafting him at the back end of the first round makes more sense than you seem to think. I was incredibly close to drafting Everson Griffen instead, but the Jason Taylor signing pushes OLB down on the list just a little bit. I think 2010's OLB class is deep enough to get a talented player later in the draft. Tyson Alualu was the third guy I was considering.
Thomas and Troup are definitely not as athletic as Joseph. I think Thomas has the ability to line up at end, but if you look at the board, he was gone before Joseph. GH took him the pick before. Troup is one of my favorite players in this draft. If he's there at the end of the second and the Jets haven't gone DL yet, he'd be a great fit here. I don't like LaMarr Houston in the 3-4. Alex Carrington is a heck of a prospect, but he isn't as versatile as Joseph - Carrington's a great end of the second round prospect though.
I can say one thing, my eight guys would definitely win in a street fit. Okung, McClain, Kindle, Graham, Mathews, McCourty, Thomas, Dunlap. Some tough guys in there.
One more thing on the Vikings The other player I considered in that spot was Everson Griffen If Demaryius Thomas was not still on the board that's who I would have taken
No surprise here, but I totally support E's selection of Joseph for the reasons he articulated With Iupati and Pouncey off the board and the the Jets signing Jason Taylor, essentially buying them another year to draft an edge rusher high, I would have made the same pick in his shoes because I love the NT/DE versatility and I think that pick makes us a stronger team in the short term, more prepared for a SB run, and addresses a long term need as well. I also love Linval's upside, or in the words of Gil Brandt - "his best days are ahead of him" JMO
Thanks man. The only players worthy of that selection other than Joseph were Anthony Davis and Everson Griffen. Griffen is a guy that has a ton of upside and athleticism, but he may or may not turn into a big time 3-4 OLB. I think he's got a chance to be a damn good player in this league, but he'll be a risky pick. Anthony Davis is the same way. The guy's a great talent, but he's a head case. I can see him becoming a beastly run blocking right tackle in this league, but I can also see him fizzling out if he never gets in the right mindset. I said earlier than the other player I considered was Tyson Alualu and in my opinion, he'd be more of a reach than Joseph. He also might be a better fit as a 43 tackle in this league.
Oh man, this mock has some serious firepower at the GM positions... I'm glad you opted for Joseph over Griffen. Although he did line up as an OLB occasionally, and even more infrequently dropped into coverage, I do think he's better suited to the 4-3, and like you said, the Taylor signing makes DL depth a much higher priority. If Joseph is a bit of a reach here, Alualu is like a 4 year old trying to grab cookies off the top of the fridge.
Oops did not see that E, I admit I read the first 15 picks then scrolled to the Jets so my bad on that but honestly I love Linval I actually see him as a quicker Ty Warren IMO But if Davis is there Id take him to sure up this OLine even more.
We pretty much like all the same players (Jospeh, Griffen, Alualu), only I like Hughes more than you and would consider him as well, but other than Hughes I would have been looking at all of the same players and I would have taken Joseph too. The Good news is, if the board fell this way I would be thrilled because the Jets have some very nice choices. 1. Jospeh 2. Griffen 3. Hughes 4. Alualu I had them in that order (for the Jets)
