FWIW, I'd much rather take this cat in the 2nd RD than Tyson Jackson in the TOP 20 Jarron Gilbert - San Jose State College DT who I believe projects well to 34DE in the pros 6' 6"/280+ ... 10 Sacks and 20+ TFL's in 2008 IMO Jackson is a reach in the TOP 20, but Gilbert could be a steal in the 2nd round Senior Season http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gK_SxTr4jZs Junior Season http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHoBtyuof_A http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXDSPbZ_OUw http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAqc85MT_-0
. Gilbert played DE most of his time at San Jose, I believe he swithched to DT in 2008 and had the best stats of his career. A interesting prospect not on many Jet fan's radar. Size to play DE inthe NFL, I don't see him playing DT.
I've liked him for a while now - I pay very close attention to the WAC being a Fresno State grad. I never got to see Gilbert at the top of his game in person because I've been at South Carolina for the past two and a half years, but I've watched almost every San Jose State game on ESPN's GamePlan. He's a hustler...a never quit, beastly, high motor player and that's a very rare find for a guy his size. Still, Gilbert has to perform very well at the combine to go in the second - right now it looks like he'll be there in the third or fourth.
I only saw Gilbert play once last year and I noticed his size and hustle. He looks like a potential 3-4 end, but I'm not about to make him a Future NFL star yet. The WAC isn't one of my strongest conferences for observing players, except for Boise State. One oberservation, I've known Jabba for a while and when he creates a Mock or projection, it's what he believes will happen on draft day. While You and I believe Gilbert is more like 3 rd player NOW, Jabba projects him Rd 2 in April. When I and some others' create mocks.....I always create them for the day it's posted. Jabba has a great track record of finding "diamonds in the rough" and players that will move up draft day.
Thanks WW, I appreciate that and you're right, I think Gilbert will be a 2nd RD Pick on draft day even if that's not the current consensus projection, although it was brought to my attention tonite that the national football post is currently ranking Gilbert #44 in their TOP 100, one spot ahead of Tyson Jackson at 45
Thx, my friend!! Jabba....you're ahead of your time. Gilbert was a good find for Jet fans to become aware of!!!
Not sure how much I can contribute to the wealth of knowledge in this forum, but i'll give you guys what I got. I like Gilbert and personally think he has a fair chance to be a good pro. He's got a great frame to work with at 6'5, 285* and can bulk up if needed. The man gets penetration like you wouldn't believe. He's got a good combo of speed and strength and uses his hands well to shed blockers. He's athletic as hell to be honest, and looks like a football player. He plays with swagger, something that Ryan will be looking for. He's really good at blowing up runs to the outside. On the downside, he has been noted to lose his assignment from time to time. He's so good, he thinks he can do it all, so he'll get caught out of position, but that's nothing that good coaching can't fix. I personally think he can make it in the NFL. He probably would be one of the better 3-4 ends in the NFL against he pass. The run ( specifically to the inside) he would need to work on, but with Mammoth like Jenkins in the middle, I think he would be able to handle the attention he commands. If he has a good workout at the combine, he could skyrocket as high as the mid 2nd, but i would bank on him going in the early 3rd as of now. Dont be surprised if he get drafted by a 4-3 team looking to use him as a DE. He's much quicker and faster then his size suggests, and will probably prove that at the combine and/or pro day.
I've had him in a few of my mocks, but I think the 2nd round is a reach for him. While draft stock can rise and fall between now and April, unless he makes everyone crap their pants and all of the DE/DTs ranked above him perform poorly, he will easily be there at our 3rd round pick and could possibly last to our 4th.
