If there are names I’m missing, I’ll add them. I know we have a prospects thread but the way I see it we probably should add two QB’s in the roster and there are a lot of combinations to doing that. I like what the Giants did having two veteran QB’s along with Dart. Give him a couple perspectives and support. So even if we keep Tyrod, I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility to add another veteran or flyer and keep 3 all year. Trade candidates Kyler Murray, Arizona Cardinals Will Levis, Tennessee Titans Geno Smith, Las Vegas Raiders JJ McCarthy, Minnesota Vikings Jameis Winston, New York Giants Kirk Cousins, Atlanta Falcons Mac Jones, San Francisco 49ers Free agents Malik Willis, Green Bay Packers Sam Howell, Seattle Seahawks Daniel Jones, Indianapolis Colts Marcus Mariota, Washington Commanders Russell Wilson, New York Giants Zach Wilson, Miami Dolphins Joe Flacco, Cincinnati Bengals Kenny Pickett, Las Vegas Raiders Mitch Trubisky, Buffalo Bills Jimmy Garroppollo, Los Angeles Rams Trey Lance, Los Angeles Chargers Brandon Allen, Tennessee Titans Jake Browning, Cincinnati Bengals (RFA) Prospects Dante Moore, Oregon (projected top 10)* Fernando Mendoza, Indiana (projected top 10)* Ty Simpson, Alabama (projected 1st round)* LaNorris Sellers, South Carolina (projected 1st-3rd round)* Jayden Maiava, USC (projected 2nd-3rd round)* Garrett Nussmeier, LSU (projected 4th-6th round) Sawyer Robertson, Baylor (projected 5th-7th round) Josh Hoover, TCU (projected 5th-7th rounder)* Brendan Sorsby, Cincinnati (projected 5th-7th round)* * indicates they have eligibility and can return to college
The only trade candidate I'd entertain from that group is Jameis unless the Cardinals are going to eat a ton of the Murray contract and take a late day 3 pick. All the other guys either stink or will cost too much (and stink). I don't think Tyrod sticks around unless he's really fallen in love with this staff, and I won't rule it out, just don't think it's likely. But Tyrod, Jameis and a rookie would be a good room to go into the year with.
My preference would be to trade up for Moore if we can. If not, then Mendoza in the draft. Not sure about Simpson or Sellers yet. As far as veterans, man, the pickings are slim. Probably Mariotta is the top option in this list, as it does not require giving up any capital. But I am not opposed to Mac Jones if it's like a 6th for 7th swap, something of that sort. This way we check our next 2021 draft QB . If Tyrod can get through the rest of the season healthy, he might actually be an option too. Big if as I think he will get hurt pretty soon. But really nothing exciting there to be honest, which of course there isn't or they would not be available. What do you guys think about Tanner McKee? This may be my preference if we strike out in the draft. There isn't much tape on him, played twice in regular season last year and preseason this year, but looked pretty phenomenal at all times. Big dude with seemingly big arm. Philly is the team that likes to have a good back-up - that's Roseman's philosophy, and they traded Pickett with no issues and left Tanner as the back-up there this year. And that's coming off SB year. Tanner will be on the last year of his deal, which is when Roseman likes to look ahead and get something for a guy whom he would likely lose anyway soon. So, he can be had for a day 3 pick methinks. Could he be this year's lottery ticket? (he comes at at 7:00 mark)
I dunno, I can't get down with Mac Jones even a little bit. I feel like it's very obvious he's a product of the Shanahan system considering he wasn't good for two teams prior to landing in SF. I sure as hell wouldn't trade a pick for him unless it's late day 3 but SF won't trade him for that.
the Jets will draft a QB. I can't imagine how they won't. But at what spot and which guy...well I have absolutely no idea. Its really depends on the evaluations of the staff and our eventual draft position. Might even be a draft day decision when we are on the clock. My personal speculation is they use our own first pick on a QB, without a trade up. I also think they get a free agent guy and keep Taylor. Fields? Well unless Taylor gets hurt and Fields makes a tremendous turnaround I don't see him on the team. But of course everything will change as time goes by. Just don't play it again, Sam.
I want either Mac Jones or Jameis Winston, and I want to draft LaNorris Sellers and sit him for at least a season.
For me to get a veteran without any long term potential feels like a bit of a waste, unless we also draft a QB 1st round. Mac Jones I guess has a little bit of potential, so it is a bit better than Winston if the price is low. But if it's up to me, I would try to trade for McKee using day 3 pick AND on top of it get Moore or Mendoza in the draft if possible. I like what Minny did when they got Sam AND drafted a QB top 10. That maximized their chances at arriving at the solution at QB. Then of course when they actually got the solution, they fucked up by letting Sam go when he had a legitimate Pro Bowl season, but I like the idea of it from the probability perspective. Just don't give up on a 26 year old guy when he just gave you Pro Bowl year and led you to the play-offs. But we will cross that bridge when we come to it.
Slim pickings on the vet market as pretty much is mostly always the case Trade - honestly I wouldn’t trade for any of those guys…and most certainly not Murray…I wouldn’t want him even if he’s cut. Guy is not a winner and lacks the work ethic we need on a young team…he didn’t elevate Arizona and he wouldn’t elevate us. Hard pass for me. Also would not trade for Mac Jones at all…he will suck outside of SF like he’s sucked everywhere else…let’s not get fooled by that. Free Agents - none of those free agents are anything to get excited over…I think Daniel Jones will re-up with the Colts most likely (though you never know) but if he doesn’t he’s the best of a pretty sad bunch. Still, I wouldn’t pay him the huge dollars that I think he will command. Maybe take a chance on Howell, or a guy like Mariotta could hold the fort for a bit, but no one on that list is very exciting. So I guess we kind of have to rely on the draft in a poor QB draft…typical Jets…
I don't follow college at all, so this post is pointless. But I like Mendoza because he seems like he's a mostly finished product from a decision making standpoint. I don't need to gamble to get the best qb, just give me one that's smart and can move the ball.
Unless we pull a trade for some unexpected guy not on that list, the best we could kind of hope for seems to be a hold the fort low end guy like a Mariotta or a Howell, and those guys mean you almost have to draft a QB this year because none of these guys are much good, and given the pretty pessimistic view on these draft eligible QBs, I wouldn’t necessarily be opposed to drafting a QB in round 1 this year and again in 2027…let them battle it out … we have the picks, and worst case we can always trade one if both play well enough.
It’s pretty fascinating how much everyone hated Kyler or the idea of him. I don’t think Glenn wants a player like him here either but I’ll play devils advocate for a second. 1 - The Cardinals were a team on the rise after hiring Kliff and drafting Murray. They won more games each of their first three years en route to a playoff berth in a miserably difficult division. Murray gets after a 3-6 start (3 of those losses by one score) and the wheels fall off while ownership. Murray & Kliff start to bitch at each other and they fire Kliff. Kliff wants Murray to play more on time, Murray wants more LOS freedom and it stops working. https://nypost.com/2022/12/23/kyler-murray-kliff-kingsbury-relationship-turning-sour/ 2 - Why try to force Murray to play more on time? One of his best characteristics is the ability to create. 3 - Murray is still probably a top 10-15 quarterback at his best and in the 18-22 range at his worst. His legs gives him a high floor and he’s a very accurate passer as a whole. 4 - There’s a misnomer out there that Jacoby Brissett is somehow better. They were 2-3 before Murray got hurt. They’re 1-6 with Brissett. He’s put up some nice stats in a couple of those games that were blowouts. The only win is against the Cowboys but fun fact - the Cardinals were 7-1 in their last 8 vs. the Cowboys. They own them. 5 - If Murray gets another chance somewhere, it’ll probably be his last. That changes guys sometimes (a lot of times?) for the better. He’s a bit of a dick and he wants to win. I think the whole he’s lazy thing is way overblown. He plays a lot of Call of Duty, he’s not hanging out at night clubs guys.. Just some points for discussion.
I feel like I'm more open to Kyler than most for all the reasons you're pointing out, I just don't want to trade anything for him or take on any of that contract. In a perfect world we sign him to a one year prove-it deal and give up no assets in the process. I do have a concern about the locker room fit but like you said, people grow up and sometimes a reality check changes people.
Mac Jones is a noodle-arm baby. Kyle Shanahan's system is one where a) insert any QB and have success, but b) that QB is guaranteed to get injured within 20 games. There's no guarantee that Mac will finish the season - not because of him, but because of where he plays. Pass for me. But I am totally on board with going up and getting the QB you want, _and_ getting another guy. Let's start there. If we get a 26 year old Pro Bowl QB, that will be the first time in 40 years (1985, Ken O'Brien). We have had only three Pro Bowl QBs since then, and they were all over 30.
The only thing about the contract is that most of the guaranteed money is gone. If you trade for him next year and he plays under the current deal, he’s essentially cuttable with almost no dead cap ($7 million or so) after the season. I agree though, I wouldn’t want to suck up the resources for FA on that massive $50+ million hit. I’d imagine the Cardinals would be willing to absorb some of it.
Lets see how it shakes out. I dont think trading away 2 pro bowlers to get extra picks, just to trade them for a rookie is the best plan
I wouldn't be down on Kyler Murray myself either tbh, again as BS says, I wouldn't want to give too much away to get either. But out of interest, why is it such a bad thing that he plays a lot of Xbox/PS? Lots of people play these things and go to work the next day, just fine.
