Was just posting about this in another thread, and thought it deserved its own thread.

At the moment, the Jets have 38 players on the active roster under contract for 2014. The cap hit for these players is approximately $99M. Assuming the cap stays at approximately $123-125 million, that gives the Jets about $25 million to fill out the rest of the roster.

    Players that could be cut/restructure:
    • Mark Sanchez, QB (cut - cap savings of $8.3M)
    • Santonio Holmes, WR (cut - cap savings of $8.25M)
    • David Harris, LB (restructure - current cap hit of $7M)

Some other players with large cap numbers
    • Antonio Cromartie, CB (just restructured last off-season)
    • D'Brickashaw Ferguson, LT (just restructured last off-season)
    • Nick Mangold, C (cap number of $7.23M)
    • Kyle Wilson, CB (cap number of $2.26M, would save $1.17M if cut)

After cuts and re-structures, the Jets could be looking at approximately $40M in cap space for next year.

    ----------

Off the top of my head, the Jets would be returning the following starters/significant players if the above cuts were to happen

    Offense
    QB - Geno Smith
RB - Chris Ivory, Bilal Powell, Mike Goodson
    FB - Tommy Bohanon
    LT - D'Brickashaw Ferguson
    LG - (Brian Winters)
    C - Nick Mangold
    RG -
    RT -
    TE -
WR - Jeremy Kerley, Stephen Hill, Clyde Gates, Ryan Spadola

    Defense
DL - Muhammad Wilkerson, Quinton Coples, Kenrick Ellis, Damon Harrison, Sheldon Richardson
LB - David Harris, Demario Davis, Antwan Barnes
CB: Antonio Cromartie, Dee Milliner, Kyle Wilson (?)
S: Dawan Landry, Antonio Allen, Josh Bush, Jaiquawn Jarret

    Notable Free Agents
    Willie Colon, RG
    Austin Howard, RT
    Vlad Ducasse, LG
    Jeff Cumberland, TE
    Kellen Winslow, TE
    Darrin Walls, CB
    Calvin Pace, LB

Out of those, I'd expect the Jets to re-sign Howard, Ducasse, Colon, Walls, and maybe Cumberland.

    ----------

With that in mind, the Jets would be looking for complentary pieces in FA to add depth across the defense and offense. I think they'd use the draft to look to add playmakers to the offense.

I wouldn't be surprised to see either a couple TEs and/or WRs in the first 3 rounds of the draft next year. Unless a stud OLB drops to them and is the BPA, I see them taking a "BPA out of WR/TE/RB strategy". Or, if they decide Geno isn't the future, they could go QB in rd 1 or 2 next year since there are projected to be a good amount of highly rated passers

Personally, I don't see Idzik spending big on "skill players" on offense in the off-season quite yet.

    Thoughts?

    Hell yeah!!

Next offseason will be something I have been looking forward to since Idzik took the job. We are going to have a ton of money to play with. I think he will sign a couple big name younger free agents along with a HIGHLY offensive draft. This team could be pretty damn good next year, all dependent on Geno Smith's progression.

Wide receiver without Holmes would be a huge gap. Hopefully one of our higher draft picks or some cap room is put towards getting Geno some targets.

Why is this such a surprise to you? Why is it even a question?

We cut a HUGE amount off our cap last offseason. Something that was plaguing us for a while. It is in every fan's interest to look into the future, especially with the amount of money we will have and the lack of talent we have on the offensive side of the ball.

Yes, this season just started, but this forum is about discussing past, current, and future transactions. It is very encouraging for our fan base to know that we have a TON of money going into next draft and offseason. Especially considering the amount of offensive talent in the draft.

He's not saying that this season is over after just 2 games, including 1 win. He's just speculating about what will happen next year, when the Jets will have lots of draft picks and cap space to use to improve the team and add depth.

And there's clear areas where we need an influx of talent. It's nice knowing we aren't up against the wall cap wise and our only improvement has to come from the draft.

I'm hoping we can address RB and/or WR on the cheap this off-season.

For RB, I would love to snag a guy like Ben Tate. He would be great to add to a Ivory/Goodson/Powell Trio, and doesn't have that much mileage on the tires, which is important for a RB.

If we decide to pick up a WR, we could snag a guy like Maclin. Coming off an injury, he should be relatively cheap, and would be a veteran presence for Geno (assuming he shows enough to be our future this year).

Draft: Trade up to the 2nd using one of our 3rds and some of our comp picks.

    1. ASJ
    2. WR
    2. S
    3. LB

    Would be a great start.

    QB: Geno
    RBs: Tate, Goodson, Ivory, Powell
    FB: Bohanon
    WRs: Maclin, Hill, Kerley, Matthews
    TEs: ASJ, Cumberland
    LT: Brick
    LG: Ducasse
    C: Mangold
    RG: Colon/Winters
    RT: Howard

DL: Mo, Ellis, Snacks, Coples, Richardson
LBs: Davis, Harris, Barnes, 3rd rounder
CBs: Cro, Milliner, Wilson, Walls, Lankster
S: 2nd rounder, Landry, Allen, Bush, Jarrett

Really really solid team. Really love the offense, especially the WRs. They fit the WCO very well, and we'd finally have solid depth there.

Notable WRs who will be FAs next season:

    Anquan Boldin
    Victor Cruz
    Jacoby Jones
    Hakeem Nicks
    Jeremy Maclin

It'd be great if we could snag a guy like Boldin, Cruz, or Nicks.

I honestly don't think Cruz is going anywhere. He's too much involved in that offense with no running game to just let him walk.

Nicks would be kick ass though. Big tall receiver with great hands. Something we need

I thought so. Wasn't sure on that. I figured he wouldn't be going anywhere

Our offensive "talent" is horrible... Boy do we need at least 2 talented players, whether its through the draft or FA.

Im praying for my guy Sammy Watkins. He is a dynamic player with great hands.

No shit... I was drooling watching LeSean McCoy and DJax replays. Jags could be worst team and they have Cecil Shorts and MJD. Even the Raiders have DMC. Seriously disturbing how playmaker lacking our O has become.

I want no part of any of those WRs. Get some talent through the draft and resign Wilkerson to an extension. Rather not throw contracts at FAs. Young talent is key.

If we have that much money after cutting expensive, overrated players, why can't we do it all? Why can't we draft a WR, sign a good vet, and sign Wilkerson to an extension?

You can not trade out of compensatory picks. You MUST use them where they are.

For those of you hoping to pick up a tall WR with good hands - giving up on Hill early? Thank god for optimistic fans...
