Given that we've lost a few players to FA this offseason (Brad Smith, Braylon Edwards, S.Ellis, Drew Coleman etc)....Will we be awarded compensatory picks in next year's draft? I'm not sure how the process works when the NFL decides to hand out these picks. I know this is premature, I was just curious. I know next year's draft is loaded with Wideouts, and we may need to trade up. The more picks in our arsenal the better.
I doubt we get any, especially since Edwards signed for such a similar number to the one we gave Plaxico, which offsets the value. We also retained a similar number of free agents as we lost. And you mean compensatory picks, not supplemental.
I think it's how many FAs you bring in vs how many you lose. Re-signed FAs don't factor in the equation. We brought in: Burress Mason and lost some guys to good contracts so yeah we should get some I believe
This. It measures net loss of FAs. It also helps that we signed both players to one year deals. The system takes into account contract value and playing time. In all likelihood, Edwards will cancel out Burress and Ellis will cancel out Mason. That leaves us with: Clemens Coleman Ihedigbo (if he signs somewhere) Laury (ditto) Smith Weatherford I doubt somehow that Pryce signs on with anyone other than us. I could see us netting a 5th or so for Smith, a late rounder for Drew Coleman, and maybe one more for the net of the other players. Obviously if any of the guys exceed expectations, it'll boost their value.
FWIW, the last significant comp the Jets had was a 3rd round pick for the loss of Lamont Jordan. With that pick we selected Eric Smith. It's way to early to determine comp picks, salaries have to put into the equation, and FA pick-ups and losses aren't complete. I believe Iggy's explanation is possible. We might be able to get a later rd pick for the loss of Brad Smith.
