2011 Starters: Brandon Moore – 9th Year: Moore has been an unheralded lineman for the Jets for years and may be one of the most under rated. He has excelled in run blocking and good pass blocker. Considering he was a D-lineman is college, it is an amazing how he has developed into one of the top guards in the NFL. He is a hard worker who gives all he has on every play. He is a solid starter at guard for the Jets and should continue to be for the near future. Matt Slauson – 3rd Year: Slauson upset Vlad at the beginning of the season to be the starting guard. He got off to a shaky start to the season, getting beat by D-Lineman and getting holding penalties called on him. As the season went on he settled into the position better. He showed great run blocking skills throughout the season. Hia pass blocking was not as good, he did improve his pass blocking as the season wore on which is promising, but he still has a way to go to develop into a solid starter for this team. The good news is he is very young and hard working. Matt has been under Callahan’s guidance since college and had a hand in getting him drafted by the Jets. Callahan obviously saw something he liked about Slauson’s ability and has helped him development to this point and hopefully into the future. He will need to work on his more on his technique and hand positioning in order to continue his development, he seems to have the speed, agility, and defiantly has the size and strength to man the position. 2011 Backups: Dennis Landolt – 1st year: UFA, hard to find information on Landolt, here is what I found: Impressive size. Has the athleticism to play left tackle. Very raw. Struggled at times in Texas vs the Nation practices, and that was not against the elite college players. He'll likely need at least a full year in a backup role before he's ready to see the field. He has as much upside as anyone in this year's draft class, but he has a long way to go before he's ready to excel at the NFL level. Robert Turner – 4th Year: Turner is the team’s enforcer. He is a scrappy, versatile lineman. Plays as an extra lineman in several offensive packages, is also the teams back-up center as well as guard. Another hard worker, high effort player on the line, who is a also good team player willing to do whatever is asked of him. Judging by the fact that they did not give him a chance to compete for the starting guard position last training camp, the Jets must see some issues that would make him a liability as a full time starter, Some scouting reports listed durability and pass protection as a weakness. He was resigned to a one year deal and will test the market next season. Chris Stewart: Stewart is a huge mauler at 6 feet 5 inches and 317 pounds. He has some bite in the run game and positional versatility at the defensive tackle position. However, he may lack the speed and athleticism to translate positively to the NFL. http://www.nyjetsdraft.com/2011/07/jets-rookie-free-agent-signings/ Zane Taylor: Taylor has a bit of versatility and technique to his game. he may even have a bit more upside than current guard Matt Slauson. Taylor is a nice gamble to take because his abilities probably warranted him being drafted. I think he could stick on the roster. http://www.nyjetsdraft.com/2011/07/jets-rookie-free-agent-signings/ Trevor Canfield - 1st Year: Brings a nice all-round package for the pro guard spot: power, fluidity, intensity, and a solid skill-level. Brings a nice all-round package for the pro guard spot: power, fluidity, intensity, and a solid skill-level. http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/71302/trevor-canfield Curtis Durin - Rookie: Outlook: Moore is a solid starter for us at guard. The jury is still out on Slauson, but I was pleased with his progression during the season, and feel that he will continue to get better, I am just not sure how high of a ceiling he has. Turner is a solid back-up, but may be exposed if forced into a starting role due to an injury. Davis and Landolt probably project as practice squad hopefuls. Landolt sounds like he has more upside then Davis, he also has a better frame to work with. Our depth with Turner is good, and Slauson should be able to improve and build off of last season, I feel that we are in good shape at guard for next season. 2011 Cuts: Marlon Davis – 1st year: UFA, here is the scouting report I found on him: Davis is a solid small area mauler with the body type to play guard in the NFL. He must improve his strength and iron out his game, yet he is worth a look in camp. Didn't make it to camp, cut before reporting.
Turner is a FA and represented by Schwartz and Feinsod (Revis', Baker's and Kendell's agents). I doubt he'll be back considering we're so tight against the cap and have so many starters to re-sign. Moore and Slauson are our likely starters for 2011, but Moore may be gone after that. How does Vlad fit in? Does he keep working at guard or do we try to fit him in at RT and save the $4 mill cutting Woody would bring?
I think Vlad may replace Woody in 2011. We should be set with Moore at RG for another couple of seasons, but we will need to address that in the very near future. I was very impressed with Slauson's play towards the end of the season. He became a major contributor in the run game. He made huge strides this year. I still think his pass blocking needs to improve, but his run blocking was really strong.
Moore should have been in Pro-Bowl this year. This guy is solid and unheralded mainly due to being an undrafted free agent compared to other first rounders we have. But that shouldn't matter.... he's currently a top G in this league. Slauson started developing well last year, and plays between 2 great players. He can get the job done for us. And with a name like Slauson, tell me you are not destined to play Oline. I doubt any pee wee coaches ever said, "let's line up Slauson at free safety and let him roam the deep middle".. I'm not sure what positions they will try Vlad at next year, but i definitely feel he needs some more seasoning before he can be trusted as a starter. Turner is a guy i'd definitely like to see back. He plays physical in the run game, and can handle a number of positions. I did not know those douchebags were representing him though. There's no way Tannebaum is going to waste a lot of time dealing with them, so Turner may lose out on being a Jet. If he's gone, picking up someone in FA or the draft that can backup at G and C becomes an absolute need.
The good news about Turner is that he is a restricted FA, so all the Jets will need to do is tender him an offer. If someone makes an offerthan they can decide if they want to match it.
Moore is one of the best guards in football, and Slauson more than held his own. He will only get better next year, too. Plus Ducasse could potentially step in at LG. Turner's value is his versatility in that he can play center and is used as a blocking tight end. I hope he's back, but if he's not it isn't the end of the world. We are set on the o-line with or without him.
