Halladay should win in a landslide.
Congrats to Halladay. I've always been a big fan of him. I knew it would never come to pass, but I always wanted him to be a Yankee. Not in the regular "I want everyone with the best talent to be a Yankee" but more "I want to get to watch this guy pitch every 5 days" way.
NEW YORK -- San Diego's Bud Black barely beat Cincinnati's Dusty Baker in voting for the NL Manager of the Year award, while Minnesota's Ron Gardenhire won the AL award. Black topped Baker by one point in results released Wednesday by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Gardenhire won the award for the first time after finishing second on five occasions. FROM ESPN^ Ya, that makes sense. Lets award Bud Black for leading a team to second place.
I don't really understand it either. Bud Black definitely did more with less, but I still don't understand how he beat out of a number of NL managers.
I don't understand either winner. Gardenhire won the weakest division in the AL. Washington took a team teetering on bancruptcy to the playoffs. Whatever. I think Felix takes the Cy Young today. I won't complain about it, but I still think Price and CC deserve it more. Felix pitched exactly 0 meaningful games, but I do credit him for phenominal numbers regardless of the situation.
exactly he was by far the best pitcher in the AL, and he dominated the top teams it's not his fault his teammates sucked. The Cy Young is an individual award. It's not for the best pitcher on the best team. It's supposed to be for the best pitcher in the league. CC Sabathia clearly was not the best pitcher in the AL this past season.
I love how you focused on Sabathia, assuming that's who I think should win it. He's not. Price is. I'd even put Cliff Lee over Felix. Again, because he won meaningful games. But today's sportswriters are stats-loving retards, and that'll give Felix the award. To paraphrase our beloved Jets coach, wins are the only stat that matters.
Baseball is not football. This is an individual award. When Felix pitched, he gave his team the best chance to win out of any pitcher in the league. Because he had a shitty team means nothing to this award. This is about individual acheivements. you want to hand this award out to players who won "meaningful games". That's not the way this award works. Maybe if there was a "Best Pitcher Who Pitched On a Good Team" award, sure, Price and Lee and CC would have an argument, but the individual award goes to Felix, no ifs ands or buts.
I mentioned Sabathia because in the poll on this forum more people voted for him than for Price. I didn't assume anything. Wins are the only stat that matters for teams. Not for individuals. You can call people who actually look at a player's performance "retards", but there are many that would call people who focus purely on things like win/loss record, which is only partially controlled by the pitcher, retards. It cuts both ways. The pitcher's job is to help his team win by preventing runs, which happens by not allowing hits or walks and striking out batters. The team's job is to win. So the team "awards" go to the teams that win the most. The player awards are supposed to go to players who contribute the most to the goal of the team. Felix contributed the most, but was stuck with easily the worst team in the majors. For him to have a win/loss record over .500 with a lineup that would be mediocre in AAA ball is remarkable. Consider this: Justin Smoak was batting 6th in the minors, but when Seattle got him, they put him in the majors, batting cleanup.
by the way, you have to be somewhat of a stat-loving retard to put Price over Sabathia, because wins are the only stat that matters, and Sabathia had 21 wins, to only 19 for Price. Also, Phil Hughes must've been better than Felix.
Michael Kay was just pouting about that when I went to grab lunch and got in the car. He doesn't realize that wins are not a level statistic in baseball when one guy is on the Yankees who can literally buy them.
Jeter obviously won the Gold Glove because he played in more meaningful games than the other SS in the league.
Blah, blah, blah. Statards win again. Bill Simmons came up with the best word ever yesterday on PTI. Yesterday was "Dorkapalooza" and oh how right he was.
As stated above, you appear to be one of those statards. He's been using that word for years, and he generally uses it to refer to a sabermetrics conference.
